Ducktail paint pic
Painted the ducktail today. It flowed really well. It's still wet in this picture, so it should lay down even more. A couple of imperfections showed, but all in all I'm happy with the results. I'll probably wait til next weekend to fit it to the car so the paint can cure. Film at 11:00.

Mark,
I was just kidding of course, but now you've got me thinking... how did you assure that your new ducktail is matching the fade on your car, or was the car recently painted as well... I am wondering because I have seen all of the work that the Mercedes painter went through on my 2 yr old 300E at one time, just to match the paint on a C panel on the roof to the rest of the car. I'm not a painter, but I would be interested to know how that's done in a home shop environment. Looking forward to seeing the car with the ducktail, my personal favorite rear spoiler, of course.

Too big to fail

One small suggestion: when you go to put that baby on the car, first put a couple of layers of the 2" 3M easy-release (blue) tape on the edges of the opening and the edges of the tail. This will prevent heartache if you're slightly off on your first attempt, or don't have surgeon-steady hands.

Thanks Jordi. The pictures look better than live, but I figure that I can color sand when it hardens to slick it out.
Silver, The color match is a hope and a prayer for this project. The car has a repaint from a few years back and has been garaged since, so if the paint mix formulas are right, there's a good chance of a match. I worked in a paint body shop during college and the really good guys were artists at both mixing colors to match or fading new paint in to trick the eye. Thom, Thanks for the tip. That solves a problem I was thinking about this aft. Mark |

Mark by chance did you shape it to fit the car first. They are never a bolt on fit. I bought mine from GT Racing which is considered to be one of the best and it took about 2 hours to carefully shape the lid so it wont chip the paint when you close it. They make them slightly oversized so you can form the edges to the car.

Kurt,
That is a great looking car. The 3.6 transplant you are planning is only a dream for most of us, so I'll be interested in your adventure. The tail had been mounted on 2 previous cars, so I took a chance that it would fit. Luckily, it does. I couldn't sleep last night and worked on the changeout. Fits pretty well. I'll post some pics later. Mark |

Looks great mark! Ya lucky coupe owning bastard!
I would LOVE to put a ducktail on mine, but then the cab thing... I may do it anyway, but it looks like you did a nice job. Painting is the one thing where you can always have at it after work and here and ther and make it better. Sand it, buff it, sand it more..and like a painting it finally starts to come to life.

Kurt B,
I've never seen a cab with the DT but bet it would look great. You could have the one and only. M |

Mark -
That looks great, especially the new profile! Have you decided if / where you are going to "badge" the tail (are you putting the 911SC emblem back on?)?
