stripped screw
Hi all,
newbie here... actually have been reading all your posts and threads for awhile now. Anyways I ran into a problem and I searched the archives but couldn't find any clear cut answers and I thought someone out there might have an answer for me. I stripped the bottom screw that holds my H-4 assembly and let's just say that I cannot get her out. It's totally stripped and I don't have enough room to get any kind of tool in there to turn the screw. Please advise. Tried posting on Rennlist but it's like a ghost town over there right now. ![]()

What did you strip? The screw threads or the driving features (slot or cross) on the head? Were you trying to remove the screw (rusty) or were you reinstalling it? Jim

These screws used to be brass but the sheet metal they engage sometimes rusts. Jim

Were you loosening or tightening the screw? Do you have any idea how tight it is? Can you get to the head of the screw with a drill bit chucked up in a drill motor? Can you grasp the sides of the head of the screw with needle nose pliers? Jim

I was loosening the screw. It's still pretty tight. There's a rubber gasket behind it... putting tension on it. I tried needlenose pliers but to no avail.
I guess I'll try Home Depot tomorrow... maybe they've got some gizmo that'll remedy this. Thanks Jim ! ![]()

The first thing I would try is a left handed drill bit; you'll have to get them from a specialty supplier. I doubt Home Depot will have them. Many times if you drill into the screw head with a left handed drill the screw will back out; if not, then screw an "easy out" or other type screw extractor into the hole you drilled in the head and turn it to back the screw out. You can also drill the hole for the easy out screw extractor with a standard right hand drill bit. One can also buy standard right hand drill bits which are longer than normal if you have difficulty getting the drill motor in close enough. Home Depot may have the screw extractors and maybe Sears too. Good luck! Jim

Can you take the whole light assy out of the car? My H1s have stripped heads too (Damn) What I did was take the assy out, then you can access the adjustment screws from inside. I took them all out and rethreaded them- Tap and die set. Then I put them back in as best I could. I still haven't bought new screws, too many more important things keep popping up.
Hope that helps a little. Shawn
