Just bought a 73 RS and have some electrical gremlins. Any ideas?
Greetings to all,
Newbie to the board. Just got a '73 RS, but found that the directionals, hazards and interior lights don't work. Owner's manual says see fuse box cover for which fuse is which. Unfortunately, car is missing fuse box cover. Anybody have an index of which fuse is which? Anybody know if maybe there is a relay that I should be looking at as well? Any other ideas? Many thanks in advance for the help! Rob

The '73 models have two fuse blocks (10-position and 8-position) down low by the left battery box ... and these two diagrams should help you identify which fuse(s) are allocated.

Sorry, can't offer any help with the electrical probs. I just wanted to compliment you on your choice of 911 models. the 993TT and 911 RS 2.7 are two of the best examples of Porsche engineering/design (IMO). Got any pictures for us?

If you've got a '73 RS, you can probably find folks who will work on it for free.

You may want to check the contacts on all of the fuses. They may have corrosion on them.

electrical problems
I think there is a blinker relais behind the oil level gauge.
also had bad directional switch, but hazard still worked. the problem with interior lights is a different one. thanks, harold |

Congratulations on your new, ....I was gonna say on the 73'RS but take your pick.
If the fuses check out ok some other possibilties to look at are the connectors where the harness passes threw the chassis on the way to the signals and the sockets for the bulbs. Both of these places are suseptible to surface corrosion and need to be cleaned from time to time. Good Luck Bobby |

I'm with Saffs, you don't need a fusebox lid and diagram to see if a fuse is blown or missing. Tried that?
VC, '89 3.2 By the way, I too am curious about the car. It's not often (from memory NEVER before) you see anyone here with a TT. Let alone a genuine RS. Probably because someone who owns both (not to mention a Ferrari 550), and has pornostars for neighbors needs to come to a "cheap fix needed - help me please/how to rebuild your 1668 calipers with chewing gum and vacuum cleaner components" site. |

Also, if you post the VIN (of the RS), I can give you some brief history on the car.

RS VIN#?
Wolfturbo must be busy... probably checking/cleaning fuses and loom connections.
I hope that he/you doesn't/don't mind if I butt in. I've seen his car (only the RS, unfortunately, not the Playmate neighbor) and if my old timer's/alzheimer's memory sorta works, it was under 500. I think that it is 493 for the VIN, 497 for the eng ID. Nice car, lucky guy (I'm sure a nice guy, too). He didn't have to search for very long, didn't have to go very far to buy it. I think that he said that it was originally a Swiss car. Maybe I should let him (Wolfturbo) complete the history. I wouldn't want to goof up any details/numbers. |
