Everyone knows the Salzburg team won LeMans in 1970 with its 917. But what did Team Salzburg switch to beginning in 1971? -- Curt

Would that be Martini & Rossi?

Nope. Obviously, a hint is needed. It wasn't a Porsche and it wasn't endurance racing.

Ahh yes, Beetle rallying. Tom beat me to it. I misread the question.

As a footnote to this, apparently Team Salzburg was involved in Rallying prior to Le Mans and the "Bugs" since Peter Gregg's 911ST was reportedly used by them for rallying.

The VW's were quite interesting. 1.6 liters with 120HP (at 6000RPM). Twin Weber 46 IDA-2Cs, 40mm intake valves, etc. They used an oil cooler from a 908 Porsche and a 5-speed gear box from a 914. Top speed of 106MPH. These cars ran from 71 to 73 (although as John pointed out, Salzburg had a long rally history before this as well). In 74, the VW factory planned to homologate a special run of 2 liter 175+ HP Bugs in order to compete with the Saabs, Escorts and Fiats. But the Arab oil embargo got in the way. -- Curt
