Weber tuning

Just got a few questions to all you carb gurus. My car sometimes blows a puff of smoke during startup. Does this mean that its running rich? Also upon startup, I hear pops coming from the carbs, I think its called 'lean pop'. Can anyone address this?
Thanks in advance.

The puff is oil that somehow gets into the cylinders. Quite many on this board have the same problem (911 owners), me included. The carbs might be popping because there is an air leak somewhere, or jets are clogged, or the setup is just too lean.

My first advice is just to clean the jets, or you could try to add ..hmm..Techron, or Forte fuel addon. These are supposed to clean the jets and burn off some of the goo on the pistons/valve plates. I personally like to clean up the Webers by hand. I just take apart the jets and clean them..this is the best way.

Some popping through the carbs with a cold engine is normal; it should go away as the engine heats up; with no choke; a properly tuned set of Webers will be a bit lean at start up and will smooth out as the engine warms up; If you dial the carbs in to run great when cold they will be to rich when warm; it just part of the "personality" of carbs.

I dont think that there's any oil seeping to the combustion chamber as the engine was rebuilt 15K miles ago. The engine is very clean and have not had a drop of oil leak yet. I just recently acquired the webers and completely rebuilt them. Prior to installing the webers about a month ago, my car which had the CIS system never puffed any smoke out of the exhaust. I noticed the slight smoke upon startup right after I switched to webers. And yes, the carbs stop 'popping' after a few seconds following initial startup.
