Engine shroud refurbishing

I pulled the engine and am in the middle of cleaning, resealing and refurbishing the lot.

Any suggestion to get the engine shroud as new? It's dirty and a bit cracked at the surface.

Searched a bit but most threads are about powder coating and blasting.

Thanks!

Ed

shroud

Ed,
Mine looked like yours. I wet-sanded, then used rubbing compound...then a couple of coats of satin clear.

PS: I de-greased it 1st...probably using carb cleaner and a tooth brush.

No real good ideas here. I "reconditioned" mine but was not doing so in order to keep it looking original. Mine was in worse shape than yours and here's what I did (sorry, I don't have any pics):

- Wash/degrease thoroughly
- "Scruffed up" with 120 grit sandpaper
- Applied a coat of new fiberglass resin to try to arrest a bunch of cracking
- Painted inside flat black and painted outside with black wrinkle paint

Was typing mine while Al was typing his - I like Al's solution better!

Thanks guys!

Al, how did you refurbish the airhousing? Looks great!

I'd degrease it and find some high temp green paint and just paint it.

If you don't want to stay stock, there is a carbon fiber shroud out there that I think looks pretty good.

I would not paint that if you ever have thoughts of selling. Buyers of long hoods want originality.

Al, Yours look great.

Nice job.

The fan and housing were de-greased and bead blasted.

Al
