'83 SC Engine in a '74 - compression?
Hi all:
I have an old copy of 1980 Porsche 911 Road and Track test and was looking at the engine stats. One thing that struck me was the compression of the '80: which is 9.3:1. My question is will the '83 motor I'll be getting have the same compression? I thought all 3 liters, other than the Euro models (9.8:1) had 8.5:1. I guess this eliminates supercharging in the future, huh? Also, when was the Lambda system introduced to the 3 liter, and can the 3 liter run without it since this sounds like a smog setup?Again, I'm sticking this in a 1974 911. BTW: any guesses on horsepower rating of this '83 3 liter and my backdated heat exchangers with a Bursch? Thanks in advance for all your help... |
Higher compression doesn't necessarily eliminate forced induction (supercharging/turbocharging), it just means you have to be more careful with the amount of boot pressure, boost temperature and ignition advance. Even with a low compression ratio, you still have to be careful with the above factors. If you can manage it, a higher compression ratio should provide decent low speed power/torque (before boost is created).
