Belt tightness and first drive 930 Turbo!
Hey, my father and I just received shipment of an 87' 930 turbo...and we proceeded to giggle like school girls. Here's some pics:
Here's a video of first drive...forgive the shifts..still learning the box: 911 Turbo.MOV - YouTube And last but not least...we started to hear the infamous squealing belt slipping noise and inspected it, but being noobs, not sure if it's normal play or not...I took a video of the play in the fan belt: 911 fan belt - YouTube I have to go out every couple hours to the garage and just look at it! Thanks for your help. |

Man oh man!! Congrats, she's gorgeous!! I wonder if the A/C belt could be the culprit. I removed my AC entirely, but for winter (and to see which belt is noisy) you may want to take it off.
Oh, and unless you live in the UK, most folks pronounce Porsche the German way, with a little "ah" at the end...Poorsh-ah ![]() ![]() Congrats again!! Cheers, - Craig_D

Belt deflection should be about half an inch.

Great car, and great that you can share it with your Dad. I showed up at my parent's house after I bought mine and they expected our usual SUV - imagine his surprise when he came out and saw the 911 in the drive way.
Remember to be wary that turbo boost! These cars are capable of doing far more than most of us will ever be able to handle. Congrats!

Good job on the youtube video. Belt is definitely too slack. 1/2" max movement is the general rule. Get a new one and read up on how to mess with the shims and such to replace and tighten. It a bit of a PITA with a new belt to get the pulley-half close enough to the fan to get the nut on. With two peeps one can keep pressure on the pulley while the other gets the nut on.
God bless your Dad, especially if he helped you get into that car. Be forewarned, there will be little annoyances that you will need to address over the next few years unless the previous owner was an absolute anal-retentive maintenance freak. Not too expensive as the problems will be the routine 911 version (dome lights, AC condensor relays, steering column bushings, yadda yadda). Just roll with it and do the stuff right. You are in the right place. Welcome.

Thanks for the advice on pronunciation, belts, and kind words. I live in Twin Falls, Idaho. That was coming up from the bottom of the Snake River Gorge. The belt is new as everything was replaced a few thousand miles ago so I'll go to work on the shims. Looking at the adjustment...I don't understand how moving the belt further out along the longitudinal axis of the car will make the belt tighten. I have the article on how to do it so I'll figure it out.

That really is my favorite all time Porsche by the way! I've got a 78 black on black 911SC, but the widebody 930 is absolutely my favorite! I'm pretty psyched for you and your dad!
Btw, about 11 years ago, my dad called me and said he saved up some money and wanted something like a Miata to tool around in with my mom. Well, I remembered back in the day, that he took over the lease of his friend's Datsun (Nissan) 280z and he loved that car, so that got me to thinking... I eventually found a pristine 1986 944Turbo for him and he sent me a check, for which I payed for the car and had my friend Kim enclosed-trailer the car down to NY for him. He had only seen pictures, but when we rolled it out of the trailer he was in love, and very importantly, so was my mom. ![]() On another side note, with a rear engined car (especially a 930 Turbo) you'll probably want to get into the habit of keeping one of your hands in a "known" position on the steering wheel at all times. When you're going through a series of corners, it's best to keep one hand in a 9 or 3 o'clock position, because if the ass end starts to step out and you need to correct, you're going to want to know exactly where straight-ahead is. That's also why racing steering wheels come with a yellow stripe at 12 o'clock on the wheel...when things start to get dicey and you're having to make fast corrections, you don't want to get "lost" on the wheel. I learned that real fast autocrossing! ![]() Enjoy the new addition and take lots of pictures! ..we all love pics here. ![]() Cheers, - Craig_D
