Release fork alignment
 
Dropped the clutch release fork to replace the seals. I thought the splines would be keyed for proper alignment. Now I'm looking for guidance regarding the relationship of the fork to the throwout level as the splines are not keyed. Thank you for your assistance. Mark

Hello,

I just completed an engine/trans drop to repair a cracked clutch fork. This was a concern for me as well. I made a mental note of the position of the fork before and after separating the trans from the motor. I did not remove the arm at bottom of the shaft.

When reinstalling the fork I installed it with the fingers of the fork not quite resting against the inside wall if the trans. Leaving the lower arm attached allowed me a point of reference when inserting the shaft although I don't think that matters, the movement of lower arm is restricted because it is between two ribs at the bottom of the trans.

I also made sure to reinstall the fork with the fork pin at the top of the trans. This is very important to remember.

The biggest challenge I found was, getting the seals in without ripping them. aligning the clutch fork was a breeze.

It took me a while to complete the job, i got the while your in there bug. Then I couldn't get the car to start, but that's a story I'll tell another day.

Mine is a 77s. I assumed he was working with a 915 trans.

The splines are not important. The pin that holds the fork into the release fork shaft is inserted into a hole in the fork that must align with a groove that goes all the way around the shaft. So that's why the splines don't matter. Any position of the shaft relative to the fork will work because the pin "doesn't care" at what position the shaft is at. The groove (instead of a keyway) lets the the pin go in at any shaft position, as long as the pin aligns with the groove in the shaft.
