Does anyone have a answer for me ? the fuel smell .....

On my 69` im getting massive fumes under the front hood coming from the vent on top of the fuel tank. I have the vent hose running to the plastic vapor seperator box(not cracked) and a length of hose running from there to the front by the left battery box. I need to know if im missing any components and if not where does the hose mount so it wont gather fumes under the hood. I would like to run the hose out to the filler compartment in the fender but I dont want to drill a hole. If it makes any difference the tank is from an 83` SC which was nessasary for the fuel injected motor upgrade. I fear that a relay will ignite the fumes and blow my tachometer at my face. That is not a safe feeling. Could someone help with advise or a diagram showing the proper hose routeing ? Thanks

Kurt Williams

Fuel smell (fumes in front)

Kurt,
Two things that I have had trouble with on these cars, (a lot).

1) The cork gasket under the sending unit for the fuel gauge seeping, esp when tank is very full.
CURE> New gasket, carefully torque screws evenly to not over compress gasket, but hold tight.

2) The Rubber piece that goes in the neck leaking when tank is overfilled, due to hardening, loose clamps.
CURE> Tighten clamps , and/or replace rubber piece.

I have never had problems with that breather pipe that you reference. (The clear one, right??)

As a result of all the days with gas fumes, on my early 911s I NEVER fill past the first time the pump stops. Unlike on all my other cars where I seem to be compelled to get to some even gallon or $$$ figure, right? A "guy thing" to be sure.

The fumes are definetely coming out of the hose. I just need to know where porsche originally exited the hose. Mine is just venting under the hood. When I fuel up the fumes are so bad I open the hood for 30 seconds to let it out. ANYONE HAVE SOME PICTURES ?

Kurt? Do you happen to have a copy of Brett Johnson's "Guide to Authenticity" book on the early 911? There is a diagram there. UNtil you fix the problem? I'd suggesting only filling to about the halfway mark on the gauge. More stops, but you'll probably have less smell. Sorry, no digital camera here. On 2nd thought, not sorry. Overall, I don't want a digital camera.

There should be absolutely no smell from the front or anywhere else when the tank is filled. If your car is anything like my 75 911 then it has a evaporator canister under the left front fender on top of the windshiled fluid cannister. First notice that one rather large fatish hose (not the filler hose) runs from the top of the tank to the neck near where the fuel is pumped in. That is to allow air to enter which the fuel displaces. Make sure that ther are no holes and replace it if necessary. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO LEAK TO OMIT FUEL VAPOR. Next remove the smallish host to the vapor cannister. This hose runs from the filler neck under the fender to the tank behind the headlight I mentioned before. It can be replaced if it leaks but the first step would be to see if it is causing the problem. Plug the metal pipe at the filler neck. If this doesn't fix the problem check the gasket on fuel sender. One other suggestion if this is not the problem. Check to see where the fuel lines are attached to the tank under the car near the steering rack. In the fuel injected cars one line leads back to the tank and it maybe just hanging loose somewhere leaking from a screw stuffed into it like mine was. (Spilled fuel in the engine compartment when the tank was filled when the pressure was highest.

Good luch and hope this helps.

I had a similar problem on my '86 and drove my nuts for 3 months. Replaced the hoses (covered in cloth braid) and problem solved. Used fuel/oil grade rubber hose. Even though the original hoses showed no signs of leaking or cracks they were hard enough that they apparently wouldn't prevent vapors from escaping.

Porsche Crest Fuel Overflow Plumbing

Kurt: Here's the diagram.

My knowledge of the fuel system comes only from having disassembled it. . .

The big, clear plastic (probably brown from age) pipe comes out of the fuel tank, goes to a "T" fitting- one side goes up to the square plastic box held under the cowl with a rubber band, then comes back down where it joins with the overflow from the fuel filler compartment (the part that fills with fuel when well-meaning attendant locks the pump on and goes to sneak a smoke behind the tank farm. . .) and then rejoins the other side of the "T"- runs down above the fuse box area and through a pipe out to the fender well to the overflow box.

The fittings that go through the inner fender are actually brazed-in tubes. Don't know whether the '69 had them?

I'm with SilverC4- before I did the fuel cell mod, the sender gasket was leaking, resulting in fumes big time.

Good Luck! Keep the face shield on your helmet DOWN when you turn on the ignition
