Need some help, look at the pics

Hello Pelican,

Need some help. Thinking to buy this car. I know it is a 912 but the goal is to hot rod it. It is a 68. Has metal 930 rear qtrs and flared front qtrs(metal). Seems the story is car was restored about 10-12 years ago, painted but never fully assembled, the motor had a rebuild and when they started it there was a fire. Owner died and son is selling it. It is not like crack head cheap but not insane either.

Please let me know what you think about what you see here. Before I knew the engine had a fire I was intending to buy and drive around/mess around with until I converted to 2.4 motor.

It seems a like a lot of work and depending on your ultimate goal and everything will always be contingent upon time, finances, wrenching capabilities, patience, and level of stress tolerable.

Upon initial view, the car has an identity crisis because although metal, the front end is a long hood (pre-74, and in your case, a '68), but the rear end has the impact bumper of post 74's like an RS 3.0/RSR...

You know it needs a lot of parts + engine - can you handle a project car? The resale value will never be strong should you choose to part with it after pouring in all the work it needs. See what your budget is including this car and what you reckon you'll be spending (add another $1,500 just in case), and then compare that figure to what is out there you can enjoy by the turning of a key and begin enjoying it.

Good luck!

More details:

I own a 356 and a 993. So not looking for a classic or investment. Always wanted a long hood early car. I have owned about 3 long hoods but never finished them because of rust issues. Supposedly (have not verified yet) all metal work was done before the paint. If this is true, that is where my ultimate interest lies...really kinda want a nasty outlaw type car and I thought this could be it...that was before I saw the fire pics.

Would the fire issue be a deal breaker for most of you? How bad do you think that looks?

OttoB,

Thanks for the reply.

I have a lift in my home garage, have some skills. It is a 4th car, so have all the time in the world. Not to worried about resale value-it is not too expensive so not a huge gamble...

On first impression, that doesn't look too bad...how are your 12v electrical skills? I guess the main goal needs to be established..where do you want to end up with this car...full restore, outlaw, trackcar, beater hotrod??? I also agree with the post above regarding the identity crisis...the rear bumper needs to be re-backdated 8)

Helmethead-sent you a pm.

Ultimate goal is a outlaw car. Eventually repaint. Would like to put a 2.4 in it. I am pretty good with 12V (many years ago, I was a certified 12volt installer). Maybe beater hotrod, had not really considered that yet. Not interested in restore as I don't drive the 356 enough because it was restored and I am always worried about it.

So long as you are aware of the significant rust issues on these cars..... You should know where to dig to verify the seller's story.
