Spring plate removal
My springplates are in need of refurbishment (rust and undersealing covered) and to do it properly I would need to remove them. Is it possible to remove them without upsetting anything? I don't want to have to adjust anything when refitting. I wont be replacing the bushings at the moment, just cleaning & painting. Is this a unbolt / rebolt kind of operation?
I have Wayne's book as my instructions!

Unfortunately, no. You will need a rear suspension alignment after you put it back together.
You will be removing the bolts the set the rear camber and toe. You wouldn't want to do this without replacing the bushings. Getting the spring plates in and out is most of the work.

Thanks Chuck,
Hmm. Makes me think that a temporary paint job will be on the cards untill I'm ready to do the whole suspension refurbishment thing.

Too big to fail

If you're going to go thru the effort of removing the spring plates, you may as well do the bushings.

Chris,
As Chuck suggested, you'll need a wheel alignment after refurbishing the spring plates. However, you can approximate the "before" settings by scribing a line around the spring plate against the control arm, then reinstall the spring plate, camber and toe eccentrics using this reference line. This should get you to your alignment shop without scrubbing excess rubber off your tires (assuming it was close to begin with). Hope this helps, Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |
