Dumb Front Bumper Question

Please excuse my ignorance but I have seen the following 2 types of front bumpers on early 911's (69-73). The upper picture has the lower part of the bumper flair out while the second picture shows the lower part of the bumper folded under. Is one an S trim bumper? Which one was standard or correct? What is the purpose of the flair? Please excuse me as I poached these pictures from another thread. I hope that is OK. Thanks for any comments.

Firat one is the S style bumper, better aerodynamics. Optional on T model. Second is standard.

Many thanks Ed. Sorted that out.

One other question. I have also noticed that some early 911's have chrome around the front and rear indicator lights (such as in the pictures above) and some are black (much like the rear grill lid on some is aluminum and some black). Was this also an option or dictated by year?

The flare on the first picture was manually done to fit flares. The standard S bumper ends normally go straight back like the ones on the second picture.

On the lenses, 1969 through 1972 had silver trim. 1973 front and 1973-89 rear light lenses had black trim as delivered.

OK somewhat confused again. I have a '70T with a front bumper similar to the top picture. While the car's options included S instruments, nothing was said about the bumper so I assume a PO installed it. I actually prefer the bumper on the lower picture but don't want to change it if it is incorrect. So which is correct for a T?
Thanks.

To clarify, I am not referring to the flare at the wheel but the section at the front of the bumper, one goes down and out (top pic), the other down and back (second pic).

The bumper with the lip in the first picture wasn't offered until 1972 (standard on S, optional on E and T). So the bumper you have was added later.

Am I correct that in 73 they also blacked out the horn grills?

techweenie 11-19-2012 08:46 AM

Yes, lens trim and horn grilles went black. Also engine lid grille was anodized black.

If you have the S bumper it was added later, but if it is steel and not an aftermarket fiberglass it is worth quite a bit more than the standard.

What would one expect to pay for an S type bumper and a standard bumper, assuming both are steel and in excellent condition?
