File a complaint with the county and state about horse crap - groundwater pollution, runoff, etc.

You can also put a nice quiet muffler on and then toss cherry bombs out the window.

If all else fails, call OddJobUno

Tremelune 11-20-2012 01:01 PM

Just quiet your car down. Noise pisses everyone off, horses or no, and very few people are automotive enthusiasts (and the number is declining). You can't just say "This is America, I do what I want!" Harley guys get away with it because lots of cops have Harleys. Very few have Porsches. My retort is overly aggressive, and I don't mean it to be, but I'm surprised at the number of responses here that are essentially "fuk them."

Horse images are pretty hilarious, though.

You could pick up a cheap RX-7, throw straight pipes on there, and terrorize the neighborhood while wearing a disguise.*

They'll welcome the 911 back after that! :D

*Do this at the risk of picking up a rotary addiction

WPOZZZ 11-20-2012 01:10 PM

My neighbor complained about my turbo with the B&B exhaust on it as it was loud. I changed to a Fabspeed which is a little quieter. Then the guy with the Harleys moved in. lol

I've only had the project finished and running for two weeks and I already found a note in my mailbox “Dear Neighbor, you’re spooking the horses with that green thing”. Huh? “Green thing”???

My speeds through the area have been modest, so I guess I need to do one of two things...

1. Put a proper muffler on her.
2. Move to where there are no horses, like an awesome historic brick building in an industrial area of Downtown LA like Magnus ;)

Bummer. Only two digits on your new trap speed meter, huh? Does it stick at 99 or wrap back around to 00 and count up again from there?

It used to flash 99, then they switched it to flash the posted limit once they found it was encouraging certain people...

The note was anonymous, but I believe I know who it was.

I'm only a few miles from Decker Cyn. Decker has gotten a little out of hand with the rice rockets and is pretty heavily CHP patrolled on weekends now. I still run it over to the coast on weekdays, and rarely see another car, but avoid it on weekends. On a Sunday you will loose count of the Ferrari's and Lambos running Decker back to Malibu and Calabasas.

My brother expected the crotch rockets, but was kinda surprised at how many exotic sports cars, that actually run, play on Decker. It's fine with him, his house is at the end of a long driveway a good bit above the road, and you can't hear the cars from inside the house. And he doesn't have horses!

DanielDudley 11-20-2012 04:06 PM

Make a cap, and cap off one outlet until you are out of the neighborhood. Or get a cut out solenoid, and switch it on and off at will.

Simple solutions first. Try a cap

porsche930dude 11-20-2012 04:12 PM

Actually I believe its legal for bikes to be as loud as they want. Atleast around here. Cars get nabbed for "Inadequate exhaust"

Good luck with the horse people. Lots of horse people around here, and lots more rich out of town horse people moving into the area. They are big on changing laws and bringing in new ways of doing things to the area.

My one ticket in the 911 was by a neighbor no less who lived a mile or so up the road in the country. It was dark and he didn't recognize the car... and if you get pulled by the HP they have to write a ticket.

Around here, the Harley guys are big on the loud pipes save lives thing... some of them are extra loud.

On the topic of neighbors, the guy across the street from me has a fairly new Corvette that he bought a little after I bought my SC. After five years of living across from each other he has finally started waving this past summer. The SC is a little loud but I try not to be a nuisance. I've always tried to be friendly... not sure what his deal was. I thought at first he was jealous over the car as silly as that is since he had a newer sports car... figured he's a car guy in some sense. Whatever it is atleast he seems to be over it finally.

Magnus, we're only 50 miles apart and your habitat and my habitat could not be more different if we were on different planets. You sleep with your cars in the living room, hear the noise of manufacturing and the bustle of the city, and can walk to see Giacomo Puccini's madame Butterfly this weekend at the LA Opera. ...I schlep through a small avocado grove to my car barn, see mountain lions in my back yard and hear the sound of coyotes eating my neighbor's dog, and the nearest grocery store is 7 miles away.

Flieger 11-20-2012 06:02 PM

Have you really seen a mountain lion there? I'd love to see one. I've seen bobcats but never a mountain lion.

YES! I did see one Max. Did I take you into the Avocado grove when you and your dad were here? He was walking in the barranca at the bottom of the avocados. We just got an email warning that's it's been seen again and warned to bring our dogs in at night. At 148 pounds, I don't have to worry about tank :D Heck, he trees the bobcats.

It was getting late so we just stayed out in your driveway area in front of the green thing's garage. Maybe I can get over there on my winter break in a couple weeks.

Does this thread set a record for most posts in one day? I know a lot of us don't work tomorrow and/or don't care much about work tomorrow, but I'm amazed as to 57 replies!!!

Wow - same what everybody else said - screw them! You can't, no matter how hard you try, make everyone happy!

Flieger 11-20-2012 06:41 PM

It might be a record for the tech forum (probably not, there have been some very cool build thread introductions and the photo threads get a lot of posts) but it is certainly not a record if you include the off-topic area. Just take a look at the Stijn! thread.

OttoB 11-20-2012 06:51 PM

What, there are other areas besides tech and classifieds? Who knew?

This too. I always stop to let a horse and rider pass. You are around 'city' horse people. I have horses, Porsche and a hot rod (louder at idle than most P cars at full chat).
Live on a dirt road with 3 full size arena's nearby.....mostly cowboys tho, ropers etc. Drive by them all of the time no issues.
If someone is riding in the road they have right of way and I slow down. If they are way off the road, as in your case, don't be 'in their face' but they should be able to handle the not so huge spook of traffic.
City people with horses.

I get the same thing, even sitting on my arse letting them ride by. We tear up the trail???? Have you seen what a horse does to a nice singletrack after the rain.

I have found the horse enthusiasts in the neighborhood to be VERY intolerant, and not just of cars and Mtn bikers. They even complained about my dog being threatening to the horses while I walk him ON A LEASH!

They usually win the battles though, because horse people lobby and organize. They often have money and group together for power in trail decisions. Generally speaking, mountain bikers don't organize on a local level (unless they're outa weed). If the horseys are the only ones complaining at the city council meeting, or the only ones complaining to the park system, the trails get shut down to all but horses.

Fishcop 11-20-2012 07:31 PM

There's never a better truism that "Don't sh!# in your own nest" ;) and obviously you've worked that out.

Some thoughts FWIW...

I'm a trained environmental noise investigator, former Ducati rider and current Porsche driver; and my wife is horsey (leave it!)... One of the things I've been surprised by is how much sound can be naturally amplified or muffled as a result of geography, topology and vegetation. The other "problem" you have in your area is low ambient environmental noise, and your neighbors are simply used to relative quiet.

It's easy to take shots at whining neighbors but from experience some have gounds to flag issue. You may have a neighbor that is in exactly the right (wrong) spot with respect to the road and may be receiving doppler sound waves off hillsides or road signs which make a listner thing they're hearing twice as much noise. This is especially true with deeper sounds such as twins and big cu inch engines. Helicopters are notorious with pitch changes for creating enormous ambient noise.

I run the 1/2/3 outlet rally muffler and it definitely makes a difference capped with very little effect on the engine performance. It might be worth getting out and about the neighborhood (be seen) with a Radio Shack (or better quality) noise monitor and check just what sorts of volume you're creating. If you can find away to modulate your right foot to keep noise below 80 dB in total along key parts of the road close to home you should be able to shut down the complaints (I know hills make this difficult). You could even find that just angling exhaust outlets down (rather than horizontally out) could effectively solve the issues.

Having said that, I don't respect anyone writing notes anonymously if they're a neighbor. I live in very close proximity to neighbors in the inner city - our old houses are mostly weather boards and "pre insulation", so not much goes unheard :D I've had to speak with various neighbors over barking dogs and late night renovations. It sucks, but I front up polite and courteous and flag the issue - I've always achieved a good result... And I don't give them any cause to complain about my car. I've completely restored my car at home. I picked the days I've needed to make noise and p!ssed in pockets by asking their prefered times/days that I work on my car  but it's worked.

As for the horses, if they're being ridden I back right off and essentially give way. I'll even come to a stop and park it if kids are riding their ponies. Horses in paddocks... well they can suck it up :p

Craig T 11-20-2012 07:37 PM

I found the solution. Here is my new muffler...

Larry_Ratcliff 11-20-2012 07:45 PM

LOL! I had a similar experience about 7 years ago when I had my 67... My next door neighbor literally started to read me the riot act talking about how we live in a sleeply cul de sac ... I actually only had headers and a reasonable muffler (it was a new monza muffler)... I never crossed the speed limit on our street but it was on a hill so I would come up it at about 3500 rpm... . I just smiled and said sorry you dont enjoy the music... and when he became more of an ass ... I just told him to kindly F off

There's a reason for the bumper stickers in Montana that say

Many have, but many good folks have also gotten out. Unfortunately many idiots have also moved from the coast, to where I live in the Central Valley of CA. It's not as peaceful here as it once was either!

I'm dreaming of the day when we can move to Idaho!

When I hear riders b****ing about all the things that spook their horse while they ride I just smile inside. The rider is what keeps the horse calm. Sure the horse will react to things, but only to the level you will allow.
And Yes, some horse people are nuts! Ask me how I know!:D

Add a tow-hook to "The Green Thing". Pretty sure you could haul that speedo trailer to another canyon or better yet put it near a public school. Just don't get caught moving it.

Ah oh, "Green Thing" is beginning to stick. All our cars have names. My wife thinks she should be named "Gretchen", but it hasn't stuck. I believe some Native American and African tribes had it right by not naming a child until the child finds it's own name. Well, my anonymous whinny neighbor may have inadvertently named my car.

From here forward, she shall be affectionately known as The Green Thing!

It does sound kind of cool if you change the emphasis on the wording ... hearing the song wild thing in my head and inserting green thing :)

Two things, a) a loud car often attracts more attention than it is due, as people tend to equate noise with velocity.

If your exhaust is legal then ignore your neighbor. If your exhaust is illegal then you do have an obligation to drive like a grandpa when you are near civilization.

I lived beside a guy with a Harley that ran open pipes. It is really ignorant to fire up a loud bike (or car) at all hours.

Simpler,
Go to the thrift store, buy bowling ball, get friend to take a full throttle/speed run at the trailer, release bowling ball at appropriate moment and continue driving. A cinder block will work in a pinch!

There are two predominent thoughts in this thread:

1. screw the neighbors

2. make a few changes and try to live harmoniously.

Another way to look at it, is say you have lived in your house for 5 years and a new family moves next door and a) either screams and yells at each other until the wee hours every night or b) has a son who is a really bad drummer who plays at night in the garage at night, or c) they have two big barking dogs which won't shut up. To most us who liked things the way they were before these wack jobs moved in, these people are complete idiots and are ruining a good thing.

Well just because we like noisy exhausts, because motor heads do (duh) it doesn't mean that running one doesn't make the neighbors feel just like having new obnoxious neighbors above.

I appreciate when people are considerate (regardless if they have the stones to sign a note) and I try to be equally considerate of them so we can all coexist. I know this sounds terribly grown up and responsible, but worse things can happen.

I know this probably makes too much sense to the #2 crowd and will take several years of digesting for the #1 crowd, but I have confidence you will get there or die trying. ;)
