Finally got it back from Wrench

Hi,

After a long three weeks, I finally got it back from my mech. I had the turbo tie rods done (Really needed it!) and fixed my blown first gear.
He drained the tranny and no metal parts, so he "assumed" it was OK. He checked the clutch and claimed "I must be riding it because it's fairly new, but close to being gone" - I said no way.
Once he adjusted the clutch he was able to get it into first, so he thought it was all fixed, but the test drive showed otherwise.

First gear was toast.

Once he got it all fixed up it runs great, but I do notice it doesn't downshift to second as good as it used to (I have to keep the revs up to go into second)
He still thinks it "dropped" due to way I drive, but there's no way....never popped the clutch in first, never ram it into gear, etc.

Anyway, it runs great, but I do kind of feel a little more mortal about going long distances in her.

So there goes all my upgrades $$$ for this year SSI, GHL exhaust, maybe wheels, I'm broke.

Wonderful and expensive, hmmm why am I driving this again....oh yeah the driving

My sad but true story.

Not to play devil's advocate, but how did he "check the clutch and determine it was almost gone?"

Doug,

Not exactly sure, but he did say there was no play left in it before he adjusted it.
Even with his comments about my driving, I trust him. He is a good guy that races Porsches, and has his own shop. We have had alot of good conversations about what to and not to use on these cars.

I know my DYI limits, and clutch, & tranny a definitely part of them.

Tranny may be, but a clutch job probably isn't over your head. It is time consuming, but it really isn't all that difficult.

Buy Waynes book, and have at it, if it really needs it.

Wayne,

tisk tisk....cheap plug:

still have $$$ left over to buy the SSIs, and the GHL from us...

Of course I would...as long as the American dollar doesn't get too much more than ours...is there a Canadian discount?

Jasper,

I'm in Calgary. As for the roundup I'm still not sure when is it?

Like I said above, I'm feeling a little more mortal for my car...I'm sure it'll pass the more I drive her.

Cheers

Cowtown eh...that's not so far away.

The roundup is on the weekend of July 13...DougZ has set up a website, but I'm afraid I don't have the address handy. The rally route runs through Cache creek or something - even closer to your neck o' the woods..

As far as becoming familiar with the car goes....it sure does take some getting used to eh? I found turbo tie rods and some stiffer torsion bars made the car immensely less chalenging to drive. It's VERY intuitive now. Occasionally I drive a stock 911 and they feel (dare I say it?) a little sloppy.

I would refer you to this thread:

Engine drop . . . day one

I just did my own clutch job and a year ago would have thought it a total impossibility. Do it. The satisfaction of doing this job yourself rivals that of the huge savings.
