what's up with the ground straps?

My SC has ground straps running from the top of the engine compartment, along the engine lid hinges, attaching to the engine lid itself.

I have no engine compartment light, and it doesn't look like I ever did, and even if I did two skookum straps wouldn't be required for a little light like that would they? There's no window wiper either.

What's up with these?

There was a time when Porsche engineers had a touch of RF_phobia. They wrapped ignition wires in steel and I believe they grounded the heck out of deck lids. They blamed things on the radio frequency interference, kinda like witches in Salem.

Porsche Crest

Because of the fairly close proximity of European nations ... the German VDE organizion, which is the equivalent to our FCC ... has had the most stringent regulations regarding EMI/RFI, so Porsche engineers have willingly gone to some fairly extreme lengths to comply. Ground straps for the deck lid was one example ... even though the hinges probably already provided an adequate ground! The braided spark plug wires for CIS cars have been the subject of quite a bit of discussion over the years ... even though 944 and 928 cars during the same time frame did seem to pass the VDE tests without the braided shields!

Perfect - awy they go! That's gonna get rid of a gram of extra weight. ONwards and upwards!
