removing PO black paint from early trim
Maybe I just an not putting the correct search terms, but this must be covered before?
Anyway, previous owner painted all trim black, looks like spray paint. What is the best way to remove this without harming the trim underneath? Specifically need to do engine grille (want to preserve original which I think is annodized?) Door trim and horn grilles What do you recommend? Brand or pic of product would be great.

I was able to do this with acetone on one of my cars....depends how the previous owner did this, rattle can or otherwise, even powder coat....
some have used oven cleaner. my acetone project left the trim unharmed underneath...whatever you use, rinse it well once you get the paint off.

Will the parts be off the car?
Jasco is a good quality paint remover that you can buy at Lowes. If you put it on sparingly you will probably be able to lift the top coats of re-spray off without harming the original coating (assuming it's still there). Oven cleaner is mainly used for removing anodizing. I would not use it for this application.

Try some lacquer thinner on a rag.

Hit it with the Jasco stripper as Bob suggested. It's the best stripper I've found, and it will not harm the anodizing.
It also strips powder coat faster than it strips paint. Another concern is what was done to prep the trim before painting. If it was sanded then you've likely got damage to the anodizing that won't polish out. At that point you would need to strip the anodizing, re-polish the aluminum and re-anodize-- or find acceptable replacement trim. Edit: I just noticed that you've got a 993 and a 356 in your signature. Since the word 'Early' doesn't ususally refer to a 993, are you asking this question for your 356? Or do you have another car that's not shown? The dark trim on a 993 would be annodized, not painted (unless someone painted over the dark annodizing). If you're asking about the 356 or a 67/68 911, then the door window trim is not aluminum - it's chrome and brass. If that's the case, the references to annodizing won't apply to those bits. If there is damaged chrome under the paint, then you'll need to have the parts re-chromed. Sorry -- not trying to nit pick -- just to understand. Removing all trim, going to repaint the car. Jasco seems to come in a quart container and also a spray. Going to buy them both...will post before and after pics as well as start a build thread...
Can you remove and save the metal trim around front windshield and rear window? Plan to buy all new rubber moulding...

Yes you can save the window trim but it's very soft and easily bent. Remove the window by cutting through the seal with the trim in place.
Cut around the entire circumference on both sides of the trim ( inner first). Once it's separated you can remove the remaining rubber from the trim without stressing the aluminum as much. |

I think the spray is just a spray tube and squirt "thingie" that connects to the can vs an aerosol. I tried it once and it is not that big of a help.
If it aerosol then give it a try and let us know.
