Then I noticed how agonizingly long it takes for the Brake lights to come on, and how much pressure is required to activate the lights!

I got the NAPA switch as mentioned in Jeff's post, and it is ON right out of the box. The arm must be compressed against the spring to turn it off.

So in the installed position, there is spring tension pressure against the brake pedal to keep it turned off. When the brake pedal is pressed, the switch arm then follows the brake pedal and turns the lights on.

There was a free bracket on the pedal cluster, and the switch has threaded holes for mounting bolts, although I only used one.

After careful bending of the arm, I got the lights to come on just as the brake pedal is pressed 1/8 " !

The electrical connection is from the master cylinder. There are two redundant switches that activate by brake fluid pressure. So originally the lights will come on only when the pedal is mashed down hard, and kept there holding pressure.

I left one of the pressure switches hooked up and just pulled the connector off the other switch and left the connector intact. Then used spade connectors on the wire ends and jammed into the connector, so the original wiring is still original.

There are three wires to the connector. I think the skinny black one is a ground. The other two thicker wires, when jumped together, activate the lights.
So I ran a pair of wires back under to the pedal cluster and hooked it up like this.
