Two months later the trans got stuck in neutral at the entrance gate to Sequoia National Forest. The cause of the jamming was that the transmission hadn't been adequately cleaned so some debris were floating around in it causing it to jam. I was already a bit soured on his operation because when I was dropping the trans off I had to listen listen to a 5 minute tirade about hydraulic lifters. He (Gary) felt that the hydraulic lifters were ruining his business because it removed the need for the easy money from the 15k mile valve adjustments. Of course this is a statistical sample of 'One'. ----- My recommendation for an air cooled PPI: Scott's Independent in Anaheim.

Oh, that's too bad. I never had any problems with Gary. He has been my mechanic for 20 years.
I will admit, it does always take longer than expected. |

A friend of mine used FW for some brake work, if I recall correctly. Later he had Aase put an oil cooler on his car. They mentioned that he should look at his brakes as they pulled. He did. They were right as he found a stuck piston in one front caliper. It only showed up when you really stomped on the brakes.
I myself have used Scott's Ind for an initial valve adjustment when I first got my SC and they re-shift shafted my 912 5-spd when I ignorantly bent it taking the engine/trans out once, early in my P-car ownership days. Based on the oil cooler install my friend had done and on their willingness to check out the car thoroughly when he picked it up, and my own personal experience, I can recommend either Aase or Scott's.

I suggest Tony Callas in Redondo Beach . He did the PPI for my 993 while I watched. Extremely thorough job but its an investment so don't get it done unless you are really serious about buying the car.
If you speak with Tony about the inspection or any specific concerns you have about the car, he will check out your concerns or most potentially serious "don't buy" issues and then ask you whether you want him to continue or stop and pay only for the time he has in the inspection. Hope this helps. |
