what are these two targas worth?

Hi everyone!

I found a pair of 1970 T targas for sale in my area. Unfortunately they are being sold due to the owners poor health.

This was the description given to me as to their condition. I have not been to view the cars as of yet.

"Both cars are T's and roadworthy.

One engine is currently out of the car on an engine stand and the only thing wrong with the second car is that the brakes are not finished being repaired, and minor body work.

I have included a short list of extra things you might want to know...

The engines are 2.2 litres each.
The bodies need work here and there, with little repainting, but extra body
panels are included for both cars.
The targa tops are in excellent condition.
There is absolutely no rust on either floor pan, they're in great shape.
There are little bits of rust on the one car and almost none on the
other... but, again the body panels are included to replace.

My father actually bought the one car for parts, but then discovered that it was in even better condition than the first one. That was when he decided to restore both cars simultaneously.

He accumulated all the parts (plus some extras) needed to end up with two amazing cars, but he is no longer well enough to proceed."

also the car has "recado seats" and they come with an extra whale tail and RS front air dam. Includes Owner's manual WKD-461-720. Porsche official manuals WKD-480-520. Will throw in Technical books plus many extra parts.

any thoughts on a value would be interesting to know.

Doesn't sound like much. I have seen good, driveable 911T targas here at Pomona for about $3-4K. I'd say $5K for the pair would net you a decent deal, but would still require hours of work, probably...

that is pretty much how high the bids went to Wayne.

I am afraid the owner thinks they are worth much more. I'd love to have a matching targa to go with my coupe..especially as they are of the same vintage (my vintage ).

From what I can see, there are alot of questions marks that would come with purchasing an imcomplete project, so they should be priced accordingly.

I do not want to insult this guy ( I think the owners son is selling them , hence the "recardo") so I am not going to look at them yet.

Why am I even thinking of looking?? I already have one! I guess I have a weak spot for these cars.

Reg since you are close, just go look and see for yourself. You can look for rust or any other potential problems. Might even find some interesting parts?

yes shawn, I should check them out!

That said the owner is asking ALOT of money for the cars , and I do not want to go in there and insult him. The cars are about 45 minutes away from me, so it would be easy to have a look but again I do not want to insult them with a low ball, especially under their circumstances.

I have put out a feeler, and will wait and see. Perhaps someone will offer him good bucks for the cars. Maybe he will have parts or one of them left and want to get rid of...who knows.

I should'nt even be thinking of it!

Reg - sounds like you've got the bug and that can be very dangerous. Once you start looking and saying, "what's one more" there is no turning back.

On the other hand, how can anyone pass 2 911's up for $3 or $4k?

Reg I know what you mean. He may be trying to sell them knowing that there are not many 911s around up here in Canada. There is guy here selling an early 70's T. I saw it headmitted that he spray bombed part of it, made his own floor pans from an old culvert, the interior was shabby etc etc. He wanted in the low 20's Cdn. I thought around %K Cdn would be generous. But hey if he fids a buyer all the better for him, I guess???

So where there is a demand the price goes up. I think your guy may find the same thing as the guy here..... and sit with these for a while or come down in price.

Reg,

You could certainly take a look at them w/o insulting anyone. In these situations I just keep my thoughts on value to myself. If someone is unrealistic about selling price, car(s) not going anywhere soon, so no big hurry to make offer. Just tell him, " thanks, but I need to think about this one."

More important issue is whether you want these projects at ANY price. Two non-running cars with rust just taking space, and Porsches are not cheap to restore or own. In the past, I have had a real weakness for "projects" that turn out to be really large, expensive paper-weights. Just check ebay right now- you can buy a gorgeous '71T, auction started at $12G's, ZERO bids. I would be tempted to make him an offer if I had $$$. CA. car, one owner since 1975, rebuilt, NO RUST.

Hardly anyone could pass that deal up. Unfortunately, if I remember these cars from eBay, they started the bidding at $15,000!

In general, buying a Porsche from somebody who doesn't know much about them is probably the worst situation possible. They only know "it's a Porsche" and it must be exotic, rare, and expensive! They have no clue to how affordable these cars are. I guess there are a minute percentage who are the opposite and only see "an old car" that's not worth much, but these are more myth than reality. -- Curt

Yes Emanuel, you remember well. I suppose it was listed a couple of times on ebay.

The owner is obviosuly in the know to some extent, but his son is selling them probably loosely based on what they have in them, possibly including time.

Too bad the cars were not finished for them, as they would be a much easier sell.
