Paint Project Update - Shine!

I spent the all week color sanding the beast. Started with #2000, got all the dust, overspray, orange peel, fisheyes, etc out.

Then I went over it twice with #2500

And now I'm polishing.

I'm still finding some nice scratches - I was having a hard time getting thru to my assitant that the surface has to be surgically clean before you take paper to it.

Here it is after a couple of passes with the buffer and rubbing compound. It could get more gloss, but I really need to let the paint cure a lot more.

And before I did any buffing - this is sanded with #2500

That is amazing, I've never seen any home-done paint job come out anywhere close to that good. Minus the fact that red is the hardest to see flaws in, your car looks ridiculously good like that. I know MANY who have gotten their cars professionally painted and would've been more than happy with that paintjob for the money. I showed my friend who payed $2,000 to get his Impala SS repainted and he was in awe of how good it came out, said it was maybe a 1/1000 chance that a garage-job will come out that good. Then again, you are the king of DIY on this board so........

Okay, time to shutup. Nice paintjob, take some good pics when it's done for all of us to see

later,

amir

Thom has shown us the results of great body prep. Paint looks great because the metal work was done right. Nice job. Thom, I'd suggest letting the car sit for another week in the sun and allow the paint to fill the microscopic peaks and valleys as it drys.

Congratulations,
Sherwood Lee

Thom,

You've done an amazing job! I am impressed with the finish on that rear guard. The hard part is taking your time to finish the rest of the car off properly and then getting back on the road. My personal flaw is that once I smell the finished product, I'd be inclined to rush it.

I'm looking forward to seeing the completed product, then you'll be truckin'!

Wow, it's coming to life! Awesome. I almost feel as though I could tackle a problem like that myself. Almost, not quite, but almost.

Thumbs up

Looks great!!! Make sure you hit it with a machine microfine polishing compound like 3M and than follow it up with a machine glaze. Glazing makes the biggest difference. I also use the machine glaze and go over it a couple of times afterwords by hand before I wax. The 3M glaze seems to work better than Mequirs # 7. Home paint jobs, when done right, are every bit as good (if not better) than shop jobs. It's because you care. Keep us posted with the progress.

Thom, you are going to have the coolest car in the country.

How much tougher would it be to paint a metallic color, like silver? Myself, I've never had any sucess with metallic paints; I get streaks of metalflake instead of a uniform distribution.

Awesome work!
