Where the f$&# is the third screw?

Hi Pelicans:

Working my first project for my '83 SC - shifting improvements, project 37 from Wayne's book.

I've removed the front-most two screws holding down the center console no problem. Wayne says "The rear screw is usually hidden under the carpet, and requires some fishing around to locate."

This might be the understatement of the year! I can now wiggle the console and kind of feel this mysterious third screw, but how the hell do I get to it?

Anyone ever see a video you can post a link to? Very frustrating, this is step 1 of this project!

Thanks!

Garment I can't remember as its been a long time but I either yanked pulled and or cut a small slit with a razor to access. Car is in storage for the winter but believe it was the razor. Very small cut cannot see when finished

It sits to the left (driver's side) of the lighted heat/defrost indicator on the hump. As emac said, there's a slit in the carpet which the metal tab at the rear of the console slides into, then a small sheetmetal screw affixes it to the floorboard. Don't be afraid to prod around there with your fingertip to find it by Braille.

If your car has the little black lighted square under the heat levers you need to remove it before you can get the carpet peeled back enough to get to this screw. Pop the cover off with a screwdriver, then remove the single sheet metal screw that holds it down. This should release the carpet enough.

Be careful, don't pull/yank on the console or you will snap off the tab that holds the third (rear) screw....don't ask me how I know this.

Exactly what I did.

Using your index finger, poke around the area shown, then with a razor blade,
cut a small notch (1/4") in the carpet for access.

Also, if you have A/C, take care to not break the capilary tube.

pm me as needed.

Good luck,

Gerry

If I am reading this right, you have not removed the console yet? If that's the case, the third screw you are speaking of is under the console, it holds the shift housing to the floor
