Transmission rebuild shop CA

All right, I'm in for it - the clutch on my '78 SC is close to giving out, and shifting into 3rd and 4th gears is sort of erratic (2nd gear seems to have been rebuilt at some stage before I bought the car and works all right). Occasionally I just can't get the 3rd gear in at all; 4th gear tends to get stuck halfway down the shift. So since I'll have the engine out anyway I think I'll go for a tranny rebuild at the same time and be over and done with it.

Will pull the engine & do the clutch work (keep your fingers crossed...) but don't trust myself with the transmission. Have been considering Motormeister for the rebuild - I know their record on pelicanparts is patchy at best but then this is only a tranny rebuild so maybe chances are they won't mess this one up? After all, negative feedback has been pretty much exclusively on engine work. Any more people with MM tranny rebuilds out there?

Alternatively, any recommendations for a decent transmission rebuild at a decent price in CA? All comments are much appreciated.

Cheers

Axel.

Reconsider. To many horror stories to even consider "he who shall not be named". Im pretty new here but "only a tranny rebuild", I thought the tranny was an important part of your car. My paths crossed with them before I came across Pelican, and even though I have had 0 problems with my engine & tranny rebuild, lets just say I was less than satisfied.

There are plenty of shops I'd choose before MM:

Hergesheimer in Lake Forest
Andial in Costa Mesa
Otto's in Venice
TRE in North Hollywood
Scientific in Pasadena
NARW in Reseda

Motormeister has demonstrated inconsistent quality and service. Do an archive search here on the board if you need more detail . . .

You don't say where you're located in CA, but here are two San Diego area shops that exceed quality and service standards!
Getzinger Motor Works in Escondido
Black Forest in San Diego

Cheers!

Alex,

Factory Werks in Huntington Beach is another good shop. Owner Gary Topal is a good/honest guy.
