911 3.2 cabrio: chin front spoiler whitout rear spoiler: dangerous?

hi, i like to fit front chin spoiler on my 3.2 cabrio whitout rear, is dangerous?
the "sacred texts" say that the car is lightened rear, i drive on motorway 120/150km/h= 75/95 miles and over 200km/h= 130miles "occasionally"))) our streets are filled with fast curves, the trunk is always empty whitout spare tire/jack/compressor ecc ecc, always drive with a full tank, i have bilstein sportstrasse and - 4 cm (2 inch) lovering....What do you recommend?

at those speeds the aero effects will be in full use - having no rear to balance the front would not be something I would do - there are some really excellent people on this forum who can give you exact reasons / numbers - but I think in the end the answer is the same .... not at those speed

Dan I´ve a front spoiler and no rear spoiler and have access to non limited autobahn sections. I´ve hit maximum speed on several occasions but when I´m doing it I have a full tank and the spare wheel and jack up front. On long curves at high speed above 130mph I certainly notice the car being light at the front(Oh I have a stock 87 Targa). Most people have removed the rear spoiler for aesthetic reasons or switched to a ducktail. I don´t really miss the rear spoiler but I definitely for those speeds would recommend at least the front spoiler. I don´t find the rear spoiler not being their affects my straight line speed because its exactly that..straight line. If was was tracking the car and high speed with agility are called for then I would install both

wow - that sounds like exactly the opposite of what I would think


so with the chin you have added front Aero and the back is still light - so to counter act that you make sure the spare is in and it has a full tank of fuel? - (add more up front?)

I am curious as to what the people in the know have for comments on this - It doesnt effect what I am doing because I have both front and rear - but I get why some would not want a tail - esp on a cab or targa

Dan, I drive a '86 Cab in the US with only a rear spoiler (my driveway doesn't allow for the front spoiler). I have driven it up to 100 MPH and it feels fine. The car is lowered and corner balanced.
I travel to Germany two to three times a year and drive a friends '82 SC coupe on occasion with just a front spoiler. Even with a partial tank (but the spare tire in the trunk) the car feels solid. His car is also well balanced and lowered. Adding a front spoiler to your car will only make it better (in my opinion).

Indeed, opinions are conflicting, but it seems that it is not a big problem or that it is very dangerous, the problem of all the 911 is the air that slips under the floor.

That's what I have been told in the past..

Conflicting answers? Well, if I were to generalize a bit...

People usually choose to run a front chin spoiler and no tail because they don't like the look of the tails. I can't argue with that, as I don't care for them on cabs and targas, either.

Usually the ride height is also dictated by what the car looks like to the owner, not by how it handles.

All 911s of this era have a basic understeering characteristic. For me, I find cabs and targas understeer more strongly. 99% of 911s never get driven close to their ulimate cornering limits at high speeds. Thus, the driver still feels reassured by the understeer. And, since the cornering limits are not reached, the ultimate behavior of the car really doesn't come into play. I've know two guys that got a little to close to the limit, or over it, and I can promise you neither one of them has forgotten it. One got things gathered back up, more or less by dumb luck, and the other did some free plowing for a farmer. Thankfully, there was neither a ditch or a fence surrounding the field.

You can't really change the laws of physics, you can however choose to drive in a manner that doesn't test them.
