paint sugg for wells, underhood, engine area??

I have guns, compressor, mixing tools, the high end cartridge masks, but this is one thing I havent done yet. I bought a case of rattlecan eastwood underhood black but after reading a bit, I know its probably not the way to go. Going on 2k Primer that will need to be scuffed but what are the recommendations on the type of paint. I'm guessing its some some sort of single stage black but do I really need to go to a local supplier and use a Glasurit or PPG on theses areas.

Thanks

I like doing the engine compartment in body color, even if the factory used to brush black over the body color until they caught their mistake.

You do not have to use the same paint system as the exterior of the car but you run the risk of incompatible systems in which one system may damage the other causing failure. That means you get to start over.

Also using two different systems costs twice as much as the chemicals will be specific to each system very little if anything will cross over.

Lastly, the trunk and engine bay being in the dark and away from UV, weather and road grime for the most part won't be that big of a deal. But the wheel wells will see all of that so you don't want to use a lesser system as it will fail or need to be redone sooner.

What is your reasoning behind not using the same system? Cost?

I just wasnt going to dive into a good paint system until I started the exterior, I can though. I thought I could buy some good tough black paint for these areas and it be a little simpler than cranking of the paint gun process.

Eddie,

You certainly could use something different. I wouldn't use it on the wheel wells or undercarriage. If you use it in the engine compartment and trunk mask off real good when applying the real paint so you don't run into any compatibility problems.

How do you intend to apply the paint? Certainly you are not going to brush it on under the hood or wheel wells? I would use the real stuff and practice in the engine bay and under the front hood. Is this the back date motor cycle inspired car? If so it looks like you are spending some time, effort and money. My opinion apply the correct paint.

Nice project and good luck.

Don

You're right. So the next question is where do actually buy a paint system like a PPG. I've been doing all my education online and purchasing as well. After a quick local search I see a lot of body shops. Is there an auto store I should be looking for cause I'm sure a body shop doesn't want to help a hobbyist?

Where to find it? Now that's a tough question. The BASF site (Glasurit) isnt very user friendly so I jumped off pretty quickly. You may want to try and contact BASF and ask if they have a supplier in Baltimore.

A Google search came back with:
Mark's Body Shop as a Glasurit shop
Corner of Northern Parkway & Reisterstown Rd., Entrance on 4025 Mortimer Avenue
Baltimore, MD 21215
410-358-5155

Give him a shout tell him you are an enthusiast and you want to paint the car yourself. If he is a production shop specializing in insurance repairs he isnt going to want to paint your car. He wants to move em in move em out. But he may be willing to mix you some paint or will tell you where you can source it. Or he may hang the phone up on you.

A search of the PPG site didn't show any suppliers in Maryland. But I would shoot them an email anyway and ask.

There are several Pelicans from Virginia, MD, DC on here maybe someone will chime in and know a supplier in your area.

Google Auto body equipment and Supplies Baltimore, MD there are quite a few suppliers. You will have to call around to find what you want.
