DME Plug Connection
The past 2-3 weeks I have experienced an intermittent stall and no-start condition with my 3.2 swapped '72 911. This began when I also started to hear clicking similar to a relay somewhere in the cabin during warm up, then disappered once the car is warm or has been driven for a few miles. So I started with the basics, I replaced the DME relay with a genuine Porsche unit and the car cranked up and ran great this past weekend, with very minimal 'clicking' inside the cabin.
So last night the car starts up, (idle hunts, which is another issue im sorting) then stalls and starts back up immediately. Today on my lunch break, same thing, and I hear the clicking again. I decided to wiggle the DME relay plug and DME computer plug, and there it is. The DME computer harness plug has been causing the clicking, if I wiggle it one way, it stops, but if I let go, the sound comes back then disappears after driving. Is it time to get the DME resoldered? Once I get home I am going to take a look at it, but until then, I wanted to see what others had experienced in this area. SmileWavy Thanks, Nathan |
It may be the connector itself...I use Stabline 22 for these types of problems.
It is a liquid you paint or spray on to clean and help the electrical connection. We used it on ALL connectors on military aircraft when touching them (can't affords to have a failure on those). Bob |
So it was the DME MAIN connector causing the issue? (NOT the DME relay socket)??????
If so,..I'd advise removing the connector and closely inspect both female and male sides of the connections....make sure you don't have a flaky pin on that connector.....a good cleaning of the connection pins would be in order,..I'd look closely at the connector pin(s) solder joints,.......then assure she's seating well... Yes, DME Main connector, NOT the DME relay.
I am waiting for the garage to be freed up so I can take the car apart...damn Land Rover head gaskets taking up my room. So I will be inspecting Male and Female Terminals, and connectors on motronic box as well as solder points inside the computer. If I see broken solder points, I suppose Steve W will be seeing my ECU quite soon. |
Before going in too deep...
Spray electrical contact cleaner on the male and female side of the connector and delicately wipe dry with a Q-tip (it will get dirty very fast, replace as required). Before re-mating the plug, spray both side with compress air from a can (computer keyboard cleaner). |

Since you have a Land Rover, I KNOW you are an expert in electrical repairs! (sorry couldn't resist). HTH, Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 342k miles |
