CA smog high CO% fail - Steve Wong help

Just a quick emissions story and example of Steve Wong's service-

Smog check (88 Carrera) showed horrible CO (7%) and other failed parameters. Since the car had low miles since last test (excellent) but had a S. Wong session since, I wanted to discuss with him the shop's desire to start adjusting the idle mixture. I did not want to start making any changes that would affect his results if I could avoid it.

I e-mailed him first, but since th car was waiting at the shop, I reluctantly called him during the lunch hour and left a message. Shortly after, I got a call back from Steve where I tried to make it clear that I was not relating the smog issue to his work but instead asking if the recommended attempts would affect his work. He went on for quite a while asking questions and "thinking out loud" ideas as to what could be causing the problem. I tried to thank him appropriately. All I can say is that his reputation preceeds him.

I did not go for the idle mixture adjustments - though Steve indicated it would not have been something he set. Instead I started searching Pelican. Many great ideas presented himself - including some concerning thoughts for a 108K mile Carrera. Ended up hoping for and preparing for O2 senor check and Head Temp sensor. Sure enough, driving the car back the next morning showed increasing CO% with O2 sensor connected.

So just swapping out new O2 sensor brought it back to VERY clean results. They did come with the stock chip though I am sure they would have passed with SW chip. I CAN'T WAIT to get the SW chip back in as even I know there is a night and day difference in my car at street driving conditions with his chip.

So thanks to Pelican and Steve Wong for helping me make a plan to fix this!
