info on 1971 911T

I have a Orange 1971 911T. It has the Targa Option, a 5spd transmission, and A/C. I was told orange is the second most rare and desirable color in a 1971 911. That A/C is extremely rare in a T, and the 5spd, and Targa option are also extremely rare in the base model T. That 1971 was the last year of the 2.2. Making this an extremely rare, and valuable 911. Is there a site where I can get production info and possible value of this car. I'm thinking of selling car.

You can contact Porsche and see if all the numbers match regarding the VIN, engine#, transmission#, and paint code. It may not be as valuable as you think. Take some pictures and start a thread here to get an idea of value. Show service records, running condition, and amount of rust. Is interior original and in good condition.

I plan on putting car on lift and taking photos next week. The interior is in good condition: needs a new speaker grille in the dash. and map pockets are missing, I was told if they show up they will give them to me supposed to be in the mess in their garage, seats are nice. One of the leather snaps for the rear seat is tattered. Car has no rust except small place where there is surface rust on exterior. Floor pans solid. I got from original owners son after his death. It was always garaged. I haven't ordered COA from Porsche yet they said 4-6 weeks out. Thanks

I was told this info by several dealers at a local show/swap meet this past summer. I haven't seen many early 911s with A/C. Thats why I'm inquiring on here to find out any info.
Thanks

Is the AC unit below the knee pads across the bottom of the dash? If so, It was probably added by the dealer. My 72 had this .

Just so that you don't raise up your hopes too high, you did not find a Picasso, OK? ;-) Targa just means it's not a coupe but a "convertible" of sorts, it can be a + or a - depending on the buyer. 5 speed was super common in the USA, actually it's pretty rare to find a 4 speed, those might be "rare".
Every early 911 I've owned had A/C, it's also not rare at all and I doubt it works (even if it does work, it's useless on those cars ;-)

All I am saying is that you have an orange Targa for sale. Not an extremely rare and valuable car. A desirable car, in a nice color, sure ! Porsche's Certificate of authenticity will tell you if the engine, transmission, color and "options" are original to the car, if so that helps a little. You might want to poke at the front suspension pan (where the front torsion bars attach under the nose of the car) as that is often a rusty area even if the car is clean.

Value ? Anywhere from $15K to $35K IMO...if rust free... which is doubtful on those non-galvanized years. Post pictures, it'll help !

Edit: I just read this: "needs a new speaker grille in the dash" - that's expensive, it'll bring a tear to your eyes. No cracks at all on the dash itself ?

"and map pockets are missing", no biggie, $1500 will buy you a new set ;-)

"car has no rust except small place where there is surface rust on exterior." - it's never just surface rust. Never... Ok so I'm back to the lower - mid range of my previous estimate ;-) Again, pictures will help !

Please post some pics of your car, the VIN and the paint code to help in valuing it.

For reference, orange shades accounted for 26% of the 1970 Porsches.

Your Targa is Signal Orange, which is a great color.

I've had about 8 or 9 early Porsches, and the 1970/1971 911T Targa would have been the last early car I would have wanted. Non-counterweighted crankshaft, and I prefer coupes.

Factory A/C cars actually are pretty rare...most early 911s with A/C are dealer installed aftermarket units. Factory A/C cars have different front pan with a front condensor and fan mounted. The A/C equipment will be Behr...the company also made an aftermarket kit with mostly the same parts but with a less efficient condensor under the engine grille in the rear. None of these systems do a very good cooling job though and don't add very much value to a car.

I would say that signal orange is probably the most desirable standard color of an early 911, however just about any color could be special ordered, and those are considered the rarest and most desirable. Targas tend to sell for 10-20% less than coupes...these days most people prefer the styling and body rigidity of the coupe. But when these were new there were almost as many Targas sold as coupes!

That said, I've owned many Targas and a rust free '71 911T Targa in signal orange is very desirable and should sell easily for $15-40k depending on the condition and paperwork history.
