Backdating a foward dated frankenstin
I picked up a 70 911 E targa that was converted to a short hood with 964 body some time in the 90s. Then later someone put a chevy v8 in the car.
It sat indoor storage for the last 10 years. No rust anywhere. All the chrome trim is still there but painted black. The dash and gauges are original. It has steel SC rear flares and stock SC front fenders. Battery boxes have been cut out and welded shut. Top is in good condition. I'm trying to figure out how far I want to go with taking it back to an early car. The front nose is not original and it has 964 rear lights so it would need some panel replacement. I'm looking for a decent backdate without massive expense. Suggestions? |
You are obligated after that intro...
...to post pictures. Is the V8 still in the car?
Speedo |
V8 with 951 trans is out now. I still have to take out the radiator and renedage hybrids gas tank.
Pictures soon.... I just bought a running 78 SC salvaged car hit in the front. Still runs and drive. Going to take the whole SC powertrain and swap it in the 70. I will have to us the SC gas tank too since the 70 has the renegade tank. |
Why not just fix the 78SC? How bad was it wrecked? (See my Garage).
|
The SC is a 78 widebody slant nose with pretty bad frame damage on the front left. I am not a fan of the slantnose. It also has a salvage title. Looking at the two cars the 70 actually looks to be in better shape. The interior in the SC is really bad.
I also don't want to deal with california smog. The 70 is smog exempt. Even not running in 10 years it's still registered because it never needed smog. |
70 targa pictures. The car was in the middle of a repaint when I bought it.
The red fender looks to be a stock 70 fender that was cut and reshaped to short hood. Completely rusted underneath. The primered fender is the one I installed to see if it fits. Well have the long hood turn signals welded to these. https://store01.prostores.com/silver...172212e3_l.jpg https://store01.prostores.com/silver...fda754a3_l.jpg Can someone tell if the rear core support with trunk latch is still stock 70 or has a later piece been welded on? I still have to take out the 964 rear light to see what they did to the rear light housing and how to get the early lights back in https://store01.prostores.com/silver...54773759_l.jpg This is what the front latch looks like. Definitely not longhood. https://store01.prostores.com/silver...f03d6b80_l.jpg |
shorthood front latch panel// standard rear latch panel that works from 1965-1989 (minus the reflector support that 74=89 had)

Thanks!!. Since I won't be using a rear reflector I won't need the reflector support. I think the easiest way to do the front is to use one of your long hoods that works with the shorthood latch. |
will you be selling the conversion parts?
|
This project is déjàvu for me.
Looking forward to seeing your progress |
I would go for a flared long hood...
Long hood latch pannel, front light boxes added to the actual wings, rear light supports, front and rear fiberglass bumpers and bonnet. Just an opinion... |

I am keeping the engine and adapter plate for now After this project I may consider a V8 914 project. Quote:
Considering sending the front fenders to TRE to have light boxes welded in.. I may not need the rear light supports. Fiberglass rear lid with a ducktail. |
This is the SC I bought on Ebay as the donor. Will see what I get when I dig into it.
I paid less than that asking price. |
