Need help with oil temp and pressure...
Hey all,
I just put a 3.0L in my 1975. Here's the problem: With the 2.7L all the guages were working fine as far as oil pressure, oil temp, etc.. I just picked up the car with the 3.0L installed and noticed that the oil temp guage doesn't even go up to 180 after driving for 45 minutes. Also the oil pressure is showing near the red line, when I know we've obviously put in enough oil after the engine swap, it's not leaking or burning any oil either and the engine runs great. Do I need a different sender unit for my guages to work with the 3.0L or do I need SC guages? Thanks in advance. |

Yes, you need to install the early sender.

It is a small world...I'm definitely glad to be part of it finally with my 1st 911!
![]() Anyway so do I have to change both the oil pressure sending unit and the oil temp sending unit on the 3.0L? Thanks! --MJ |

You reminded of my task a few months back. I replaced my gauges with 'later/newer' white-faced gauges. Same problem, temp was too low.
I had to remove and replace my temp sender to match the gauge. Good luck! |

Yes, you have to change both the oil temperature and oil pressure sending units; either that or get the gages from a 3.0 liter and install them in your dash. You'll need oil temperature sender 901.641.632.00 along with the 14 mm x 18mm metal sealing ring (900.123.007.30) for it. The sender is located on the rear of the engine just to the right and down from the fan. You'll need oil pressure sending unit 911.606.111.00 and perhaps the 18 mm x 24 mm metal sealing ring (900.123.009.20) for it. Recently though, some of the oil pressure senders have been coming with tapered threads which are sealed with teflon tape like a pipe fitting. The metal block the oil pressure sender is mounted in (it's in the small oil line to the cam tower located on the back of the engine on the passenger's side) often has to be taken off the engine and mounted in a vise to remove and reinstall the sender. This involves getting the A/C compressor (if you have A/C) and some of it's bracketry out of the way. The A/C refrigerant lines are not disconnected but instead left on the compressor which is placed out of the way on the right rear fender after padding the fender with rags, blanket, etc. Since one has to disconnect the cam tower oil line to remove the metal block two more metal seals (12 mm x 15.5 mm), part no.: N.013.812.5 are required and perhaps a ferrule, part no.: N.020.825.1
Hopefully you can get the senders off your old engine but I'd recommend using new sealing rings. Cheers, Jim |

Jim,
Thanks for all the info. After reading your response, I'm not sure if I want to mess around with the oil lines. I have access to a couple of gauges off a 78SC for $30.00 each. Wouldn't that be easier? Will they mount right in and have the same wiring connections? Thanks! --MJ |
