Question Steering column switches replacement

I'm in the process of having the interior of my 72 altered to a later-style look, and have a quick Q:

When I changed the steering wheel to a 3.2 Carrera s.w, the switches now sits so much farther behind the s.w that I can't reach them without lifting my hand off the s.w, which is kind of annoying..
I believe my problem is visible in the pic below.

Are the 74-and-on (sort of "s"-shaped) switches a straight replacement for my older ones, or will I have to modify mechanical and/or electrical stuff to get them to work?

Anyone done this?
