One thing that hasn't come up - are you sure that you have the correct one? If your car is an 86, you should have the internally regulated alt.
Porsche 911 & Carrera Charging System - Page 1 when i bought mine a few years ago, I think I went with the Bosch reman'd alt from Pelican. Followed the install instructions in Wayne's 101 projects book, and while I had it out, I also replaced the fan housing and fan. I was going to replace the ground cable, but I didn't have good access to the bolt on the case. Ended up just polishing the connector with steel wool and put it back on the new alternator. Also, I installed a voltmeter in the center console, underneath the A/C controls, direct wired to the battery. So I know for a fact today while driving around it was running about 13.8 volts. Perfect. So - if you know all of your wiring is good, and you feel confident your installation was good, then it can only be a bad alt. It happens. Swap it out. Actually - if you want, I'll send you the old one out of my 84 (if you can wait a week or so for me to ship it). It still works. The only reason I swapped it was because I was doing the fan/fan housing, and I figured I'd do it while I had it out. You can just pay me shipping. That's even cheaper. Send me a PM and we can talk about shipping. Let me know. Ken |
Hey Ken, that is a great offer. Let me know what you want for it. Zip would be 98230 Blaine ,Wa. It may not be worth shipping, as I have to bring it through customs. I do appreciate your offer.
I was standing right there when guy tested the alt and saw that it worked. He loaded it down, the voltage would drop, which is expected, but as soon as he took the load off, voltage came back up(14.5). Shouldn't be any load in the car, as I have been keeping a charger on the battery,(12.5-6 volts) when charger comes off. I use a CTEK smart charger. I'll try to post a couple of pics, but might not work for me. Think I got it. Contacted mechanic I got the alt from, he says just run it the way it is, should be fine.?? Just to clarify again, this is a remaned alternator.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356843359.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356843403.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356843448.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356843495.jpg |
It sounds like that at this stage you should now run it over to a good auto electric shop...I have in the past fiddled with similar electrical issues, and the auto electrician I use found my the problem in about 5 minutes..I would think that in Courtney there will be a few good shops that you could take it to - It might cost you $50.00 but it would end your pain ay.
Cheers |
Maybe it wasn't clear, I did have it at a good auto electric shop twice, and both times, he said " there is nothing wrong with the alternator". Hooked it to his test bench & ran it, and put out 14.5 volts every time. He didn't rebuild it, as I got it from a Porsche mechanic that has done work for me before. It is a Bosch remanufactured part. So there must be something in the way I am hooking it up, or the wiring in the car. Just don't understand what could have happened in the car, as the other alt worked, it just over charged. I got this one, installed it, new battery, fully charged, now won't charge.???????
Thanks |
PS, Miglenda, what did your mechanic find on your car?
Thanks jack |
Looking at your pic, I wonder about the ground end on the engine, the one at the back of the shroud. Can you run another heavy gauge ground to another spot and see if that's any better? I'd be suspicious of how good that connection still is.

When you re-installed the alternator/fan assembly did you reconnect the 4 (four) wires back:
I just want to make sure you got both brown wires reconnected. |
ok, is the alt out? if it is, make sure the battery + is disconnected, with your multimeter on ohms touch the big red wire on the engine with one probe and touch the other end to the + battery cable (good extension wire will be needed). it should beep with almost no resistance. if good touch brown wire that goes to ground ontop of the engine and touch the other probe to the ground cable on the battery. that too should beep and have low resistance. tell me the results, ty

Sorry...You were clear it was
me that wasn't. What I meant to say was for you to drive the car over to the auto electrician so that he could check a few things out on the spot- Not meaning to doubt you - just confirm. Does this shop specialize in 'automotive electrics' or are they a shop that do both general mechanical repairs plus auto electric's? If they are, you may want to take the car to a shop that only does automotive electric work. There are not that many full auto/marine electrical shops relative to normal general repair shops. These guys really do understand electrical issues inside and out. Re your question: No, I have never had any electrical problems with my '86. Only repairs have been basic such as brakes, alternator, valve sets ect. The electrical issue was on the M/home - I just couldn't find the problem. The auto electrican just made a couple of checks and narrowed it down to one of the looms within minutes. Anyway back to your issue...The only other thing that comes to mind are the cables / wiring running from the alterator to the battery. Often cars that have their battery mounted that far away from the alternator can have battery cable issues. Give this a shot - Use your battery to power up the 'hot' wire that comes of the alternature -at the alternator -and then check the voltage on the positive battery cable at the front...That will at least provide you with the info you need to know if the cables are defective between the alternator to the battery. Also check the battery ground cable between these two points including your battery cable terminals. Let us know how you go. Thanks |
This shop is basically just a rewind shop, but he does understand what is going on in the car, but doesn't do the install for you. I did connect the battery and checked the voltage at the wires with the alt out, and had full voltage. I didn't do the ohms resistance check yet & won't get to it for a while as I am flying out in the morning for a months vacation. So will have to deal with it when I get back. Thank you everyone for all your great suggestions, I'm sure it will be a simple solution once I get back at it. Will keep you posted when I get back.
Happy New Year to you all!!!! Cheers SmileWavy jack |
long shot
Hi...Just one last thought- for the moment- 3.2's can have an external voltage regulator and or an internal one...By any chance does your car happen to have an external voltage regulator?... Hopefully it has, as it may very well be the gremlin that you are looking for.
We will all look forward to see how the puzzle is solved Have a great vacation! Cheers! |
The pictures show that it is a internal voltage regulator. The car is a 930, if that makes a difference.
Thanks again. |
Very, very nice Camaro!
A tad bit easier to work on eh- Plus easier on the wallet Cheers! |
Yup, totally different experience though. I wouldn't trade the Porsche for it.
Happy New Year. |
