Porsche "strap" or "plastic block"

Can anyone explain the purpose of these and if they can be replaced without pulling the motor? The part number for item #12 is 911-504-930.

Thanks. My search found nothing. These are quite helpful. The threads do not address installation of factory material with the motor in place. Can I push them in from the bottom? the top? Or does it require pulling out the motor?

I tried black foam pipe insulation from Home Depot as a replacement....filled the gaps nicely but melted within 5 minutes of firing the car up!!

I'll stick with factory OEM. The Porsche Engineers probably tried the same thing.

my take on purpose; to prevent warm or hot air from below engine from being pulled back into engine bay by the cooling fan.....same purpose as sheetmetal & seals that surround the engine.
Secondary benefit is a cleaner top-side of engine.

You can replace them with engine in car, but it's much easier with engine out. The foam blocks are soft enough to compress to manuever into position and then they will expand to fill the available space. They are tougher than they appear....especially compared to blocks that have been in the car for 30 years.

I replaced the vacuum hose along the rear firewall last winter and know my foam is in bad condition. The parts manual indicates 911 504 930 has 2 per car. $23.50 x 2 = $47.00 for two pieces of authentic german TUV approved foam, gotta love that Porsche tax.

Grainger has 2"x 12"x 12" has a polyurethane open cell foam sheet for $10 that is rated to 180 F. I know it gets hot in there, but would guess that is high enough since it only touches the body. As long as you aren't hung up on laser cut edges, this seems like the way to go.
