996/ Boxter s rear brake caliper fitment on 911SC
Brake experts
I was told by Clint at RSR that 996 brake calipers (part #996.352.421 &,442) would fit the rear of an SC with 16" FUCHS. Has anyone made this work? I have been searching the forum but most people are running the standard rear Boxter caliper rotated to the top of the rotor with a smaller rotor. I realize this is required if you want to keep the standard master cylinder but I have removed that constraint to get a bigger rotor to sink heat. Along with the adapters RSR sold me 298 x 24mm rotors. After removing 0.1 inches from the adapter to get the rotor centered in the caliper (not sure why the parts were wrong but I have a theory) I thought I was home free until I tried to install the wheel which is hitting the caliper. The plan is to use standard boxter calipers (#896.351.421 & .422) on the front with 298 x 24 rotors. The brake bias will be adjusted using a dual master cylinder setup with a balance bar. I am using the system by Redstone Performance Engineering setup which uses Tilton master cylinders. With a slightly different adapter, it would appear that the standard front boxter caliper will fit the rear 24 mm rotor. The piston diameters are larger (for the 986 caliper vs the 996 calipers) so the master cylinder combo I have may not work but I can change that and balance the system with the bias bar. My problems could also probably be solved with 17" wheels however I think I want to keep the option of having the 16" s fit. Right now I am favoring the idea fo finding a set of 986 calipers for the rear. Is this a bad idea? Is there a better solution? Thanks for any wisdom or experience the forum can offer |
