WOW - too funny how these type threads always bring out the non-a/c chest beaters!

The owner also had a new clutch and pressure plate put in with Porsche parts. He had 32 years of invoices of all the work done on the car. It is mostly oil changes, tune ups and tires. I do not use AC much up here in New England because I just go topless when it is hot. This is not my Daily ride it is strictly for fun from April to Nov. weather permitting. I like the look without the heater hoses. Heck I don't need heat either. except for defrost on a cool morning I guess. The less stuff back there the better I can store it till I trade it for something easy. Like this LOL !! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356131303.jpg |

Maybe someone's feeling overly sensitive about needing A/C? ;) |
Drove my Targa here in the Northeast and there were select days that I really wanted AC not only for myself but for my passenger. No mystery my recently acquired '88 911 has updated AC.

If interested, I would be glad to swing by and check out your 84 and help you put together a plan to get it back in action by summer. Not a business proposition just an offer of assistance. I have worked thru a couple of 911s and 930s. Nothing exotic, just the basics. |
For a "driver" car, if the AC was already upgraded and worked well, I wouldn't consider removing it. The advantage of having it, even if used rarely, would outweigh the benefits of not having to work around it every once in awhile, IMO.
On my car, the AC was original and didn't work. Knowing I'd never pony up the $ to update it and make it functional (rather spend that money on other aspects of the car), I removed it as well as the plumbing. I'm also in NH, so even our hottest days aren't usually too bad. However, if it *was* in good shape, I'd have left it. |
Great question and discussion, so whats the answer for the Philly area for a non dd? I am going to drop the engine this winter, but the previous owner installed an updated AC system. I am thinking Targa top is off as often as possible and put money into a louder stereo and Carbrella rather than freon charges.....

Whether or not you can live without the A/C depends on the climate, vehicle use and the individual. Personally, I much prefer to have the windows down and top open/down/off than have the A/C on (and I live in Austin, TX). This is a constant source of contention when my wife and I are in the car together as she does not share my affinity for the open air (guess who wins).
Even in the Austin summers I only use the A/C in my daily driver (M3) if I need to be driving in the middle of the afternoon, otherwise (mornings and evenings to/from work), it's windows down and roof open. So naturally one of the first things I did was remove the A/C from my 911 when I bought it. We don't do too many driving events down here in the middle of the summer anyway - sort of the opposite of when I lived up in NE Ohio. The A/C system did not work, it was heavy (York compressor), and as you said, it just cluttered up the engine bay too much for me. I was initially doing track events as well, so all that extra weight exactly where you don't want it didn't help either. I prefer a much simpler engine bay, as you can tell from the photo :). I should add that this engine started out as a CIS 2.7 that looked nearly identical to your 3.0 (except for compressor). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356144982.jpg |

I love the look of the engine bay without AC, but geez, when it is 100 degrees
here in DC, it sure is nice to go for a drive with a "cool" car. I upgraded using the rennair package and it works great. Is a personal choice really. I dont like extreme heat, and I dont want to park my car for the summer, so it was a no brainer for me. |
you will run out of funds long before you finish if your budget is 1k... unless you already have some of the upgrades.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I know I'll never use it, but is it worth the hassle of taking it out? The compressor and blower unit in the front sure, but should I bother taking all the plumbing out as well?
I have an aftermarket system the PO went to great lengths to install. What is a complete aftermarket system worth? |
I removed my whole A/C system front to back in my '70 T. My car is even a non sunroof and I live in the dirty south. It was pretty haggardly looking anyway and afterwards my car really felt lighter. It also frees up a couple of horsepower too because your engine isn't having to push an old worn out compressor clutch. Plus the A/C's from those years were dealer installed crap anyway. I never looked back or regretted it afterwards.
