Stuck in 4th gear! HELP!!

MY Brother in Law is in town for the holidays and wanted to drive my 71 around the block. I agreed and rode along. There was no fast driving or heavy throttle, but he was fighting the gears a bit. We stopped he put it in first turn a corner and shifted to fourth. At that point it is now stuck in fourth. Clutch works fine but it is solidly stuck in fourth. I have checked the coupler and all is well there. Also fluid is clear and full. Any trouble shooting tips? This is a 71 2.2 with the original trans. By the way it has only been on the road for maybe 500 miles after a rebuild so not a nice Christmas present!

thanks for any advise / tips.

Can you get it moving while in fourth (engine running, using clutch)? Get it up to speed and with or without clutch, slip it out of gear?

I did get it up to speed and still stuck. The clutch does work. Disconnected the rod from the coupler and can't get the gear to change there either.

Unfortunatly cleal you have to drop engine and transmission and take apart.
Probably not what you want to hear, but that is what i had to do.
Other Pelicans may have some advice, but our race shop mechanic is a 30 year Porsche wrench and we had no easy fix.

I drove mine for several hundred miles on track before it got stuck.
The transmission actually gets stuck in 2 gears simultaneously but the symptom is feeling as if stuck in 4th.
Rocking the car forward and back may dislodge but you will still have the initial problem, or if on lift rotate the rear tires back and forth. Another person must be in car to bump the shifter to neutral.
My clutch also was unaffected.
Best of luck and i really hope you resolve your problem.
God, i love these cars!...........most of the time.

I pulled the guide fork plate and was able to easily get the rods lined up. Problem solved! Not sure how it got out, but hopefully it won't happen again.
