Bit of a dilemma:Poll

So I bought a 912 with intentions to hot rod it a bit. It is a bit of a bastard at the moment. But after dechipering all the info from the previous owner's son and what records I have, the car is a 1965 Karmann built originally ivory white coupe with only 24,616 miles. I cannot find any rust anywhere, it is crazy-had the car on a lift and it is insane how clean the underneath truly is. All the parts are there and basically the owner passed before he finished the project. I bought the car from the son. Everything in in great shape, the interior, the lenses, lights, etc.

When you vote, keep in mind I already own a fully restored garage queen 1962 356, a modded 993 and a E class daily driver. My intentions were to paint it a unique color and stuff a 2.4 or build a 2.5. Anyway, based on all of the above would you???

*************UPDATE 12/26/12************

Got the COA from Porsche today....

It is originally 6603-Gulf Blue

10/20/1965 completion date.

The engine matches.

I think it would be a shame to remove such a great example from the world. You sound very surprised to find out exactly what it is, so I assume you got a great deal on it. If so, you should be able to sell it at a profit and get something that better fits your purposes.
You make a few bucks, someone else gets to preserve a piece of history, and your project continues with more funds and a different car. If you have the time, that sounds like a win all around.

@Oso, yeah completely shocked, who flares out a 24,000 mile car? Saddest part is that the flares are done in all metal and done in very high quality. Also sad to cut them out and put it back to narrow body. I did get it for a good price, so not too worried about losing money. What else is weird, is that since it is a short wheel base car, the rear wheel is really forward in the wheel well opening, looks kinda funky...

Even though I am a 912 purist, I would continue with your hot rod plans. It is not like the bodywork hasn't already been done. If it was an early '65 with a painted dash I might feel otherwise, but this is a '66 so here is really nothing overly special about it. The low miles are kinda irrelavent since it as been customized and repainted and is no longer an original, low-mileage car.

Hot rod it. And drive the fun out of it.

Build it! It's already almost there. Like said above, even if you put it back together, it will never be "original" anyway... So go for it, build away! It's looking good so far.

Might as well cont what was started....you can't return it to 'unmolested' anyway and the PO obviously did quality work. Get on with the Hot Rod.

While I ponder away, going to get on with correcting all that black trim. What do you guys recommend to strip the black paint of the engine grille?

Started stripping this thing to take trim to get polished/chromed. Also removed the wrong rear bumper. About to remove the front bumper.

I don't think I want to sell it, but if someone is interested, contact me before I get too much further along.

Looks to me as if the car is past the point-of-no-return to get it back to original with any kind of "authenticity". Build the hot-rod and enjoy!

It would really be as easy to return to stock from what you have now as returning to stock from a hotrod.

So unless you REALLY want a stocker, keep going on the hotrod.

I say continue the build in the way the last owned intended. My only other advice is to get 'er done as soon as you can and stop thinking about it - that way you will be able to enjoy it sooner than later unlike the last guy (which is kinda sad).

Bought it to hotrod. Started working on it and thinking how clean the interior and rest of car is and how easy it could become a driver...has me very conflicted.

The 356 does not get driven enough, so I know I don't want another garage queen restoration. The 993 is just the perfect car IMHO, so was really thinking to go nasty with this 912.

Recently sold this and did not keep it to long...when I bought it I thought I would keep for a long time, but I kept finding myself trolling on forums like a crack addict looking for a long hood fix.

That's a blessing in disguise. A hot rod is going to need suspension upgrades anyway, so add newer torsion arms to lengthen the wheelbase, as Porsche did.
Looks like a great project.

I'm not an expert on the SWB cars, but it's my understanding that the difference in wheel base between the SWB cars and the newer cars is due to the length of the rear suspension pieces.

I don't see why the torsion arms and trailing arms from a '69 or newer car couldn't be installed to upgrade the rear suspension.

Hopefully someone who has done this upgrade will chime in the the details.
