Differences between 915 and G50 shift couplings?

Picked up my "new" 1987 G50 yesterday and my first fix will be replacing the shift bushings. While looking through various threads and even youtube videos I thought I understood the process since the couplers I saw are virtually identical to those on the 914. I was looking through the Pelican site to order a bushing kit when I realized that the G50 coupler appears to be much different than the 915 coupler.

In looking at the G50 coupler, where does the slop occur? I'm not seeing where any wear will occur on the coupler itself. I will replace the cup washer on the shifter and the rod bushing (in the tunnel). However, where else would slop occur other than those two points? I haven't found a good picture yet showing the whole system so I want to make sure I order all the normal wear parts.

Thank you.

You could also look at Stromski Racing website. They offer a coupler for the G50. He has some nice tools as well.
Happy New Year to all the Birds out there working on and caring for their cars.

Thank you for the reply.

I'm hoping someone has some experience with this so that I can make sure I cover all the bases!

I replaced the internals of the stock G50 shifter with the J West short shift (deletes that plastic cup/bushing altogether, uses the stock boot, knob etc), and used the (harder than stock) coupler pillow, also from J West. Together with WEVO engine/tranny mounts.

No slop. Amazingly precise.

Pretty sure Pelican could supply these parts as well, as they already list the J West relay kit (Pelican told me once they can supply any part from a supplier they already carry stuff from, even if not listed in the web catalog).

If everything else is left stock, you may notice more from the harder coupler pillow than the stock one. I was already used to the transmission noise from the WEVO mounts; didn't notice any increase over that.

I too replaced my shifter on the 88 with the JWest kit. I retained the stock coupler. I am very pleased with the results. Shifts better than any Porsche I have ever driven. Short and precise.

Maybe that's the way to go. Still don't understand the differences in couplers and which parts wear (and should be replaced). The J West coupler looks entirely different than the stock part.

the coupler on my 91 turbo g50 and the one on my 73 915 are the same. You punch out the old plastic insert and push the new one in, good as new.
I think some of the g50 use a different coupler.
