I have come to the conclusion that I need a CO tester. You can turn the part-load screw, and the idle screw till you are blue in the face; still never being certain that you are on the money. I need to see numbers and ratios.. So, where can I pick one up??
Thanks; Jason Borkowski |

There was a good thread about this months ago. I think the bottom line was that the cheap units were very inaccurate and weren't worth the money.

Mmmm...looks suspiciously like a battery charger, don't it?
My pro wrench has a Sun tester that costs several thousand. I wonder how much accuracy you can buy for $249.99? Jason, please buy one from good 'ol JCW and give us a full report. If you can, have the reading compared to a mega-buck tester. BTW...JCW is a bit of an American institution is it not? I remember reading the catalogs at my American grandfathers house, when I was only knee-high to a spark plug! ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website [This message has been edited by Doug Zielke (edited 08-17-2001).] |

Hmmmm, the JC Whitney unit looks suspiciously like the Gunson Gas Tester Pro which can be found here for $199.99 with free shipping: http://www.aep.bigstep.com/category.html;$sessionid$MH3G2VAAAAGONWGIHWDHBMQ?U CIDs=64343%7C64350
You can also get the tester without the volt/amp meter for around $137.00 Kurt V 72 911E |

I have one of the Gastester units (the little one with only the co meter). If you will be patient and follow the instructions to the letter, it seems to work well. My car (a 1980 911SC) was running waaaaay too rich and I was able to adjust the injection so that it now idles at about 2% and richens up to about 3.5% at or slightly above 3000 rpm. The 2% is approximately equal to 13.8:1 air to fuel ratio. Also have the O2 sensor disconnected. The car runs well, gets about 17 mpg in town vs 14.5 mpg and gets about 24-25 on the highway. Engine temp usually runs at about 8 o'clock on the gauge (approx. 190-200 degrees F.) and doesn't smoke at startup.

Hey, finally a way for me to make money on this bbs! I happen to sell CO analyzers and can let one go for $9700.00 (not exactly JCW pricing) It measures from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm at 0.5% precision. Oh, well probably gonna lose this sale:-(

Thanks everyone, I think that I will go with the Gastester unit.. It is right in my price range.
Hell, then I can tune up my car, the lawn-mower and the damn snow blower too! That's right; fun for the whole family for only $199.95!! |

I have one of those G machines. Matched readings against expensive machine, use that difference for adjustments. Good enough to pass smog on 1st pass........Ron
