Installing G50 onto a 2.7 RS engine

Just wondering, is it possible to connect a G50 gear box to a 2.7 RS engine, is it feasible??, would it be better than having a 915??, have heard that the G50 is a lot heavier.

Thanks

The G50 is a lot heavier, has fewer gear ratios available, requires major changes to the rear suspension, requires replumbing the pedal cluster on a pre 84 car. It will handle higher hp more gracefully than a 915. IMO a lot of hassle and expense for very little benefit. Yes, it bolts to an earlier case after a new flywheel clutch and pp are installed.

Does anyone know the actual weight of the G50 Tranny. I'm not Hercules, (although I'd like to think I am), and I can pick it relatively easily. My brother took it over to the shop and picked it up and out of a trunk of a sedan. From my crude muscle guages, I would guess about 150-200lbs. Is a 915 1/2 of this? Hard to imagine how it could be. So that said, when a G50 is said to be much heavier, were talking about 50-75 lbs? Definetly not enough to cause much of a notice. Especially in bloated late eighties cars like mine.

Hello

It will bolt up but the clutch is a problem.

You either have to manufacture a flywheel or a pressureplate

However the G50 trany will not fit into the 2,7 Carrera body.

The 950 trany wighst the same like the latest euro 915 with the oilcooler. The G50 was a bit heavier.

Other issues are the drive shafts from the G50 are different too.

Hello

I forgot to mention that the floorpan has to be "expanded" under the G50 shifter to clear the mechanismen.

Thanks guys
Sounds like its going to be too much work just to get a nicer gear change in my car SmileWavy

Hello

The G50 gearchange is different but not nicer !

Actuall wights from dry tranys in Al Si 8 Cu 3 material are:

915 with Oilcooler, front carrier and cluch TOB mechanismen: 60 kg
950 with carrier and cluch TOB mechanismen sans clutch slave cylinder 60 Kg.

With ZF limitet slip you can add 3-4 kg

It would be interesting to see some weights of the G50s. I have never weighed one myself. Accordining to Steve Timmins website the G50 is 100# heavier than a 915. I find that hard to believe. Just monkey curiosity here, What was the source for your G50 weights Roland?

My 915/67 al case, cooler, pump, LSD, front carrier, clutch mechanism, no fluid, no starter weighs 122# (55.5 kg)

My similarly equipped mg case 915, w/o LSD weighs 95# (43kg) Both measurements done on certified/calibrated electronic scales.

Just from moving them around the G50 feels heavier, but that observation is not really significant.

Hello

The source is a bathroom unit that is 5% accurate. I need that thing to ship parts via mail or UPS ;)

Anyway they are to heavy for UPS and get shiped in closed DB crate boxes.
