Difficult to fill with Gas

My 82 911sc has always been difficult to fill at the gas station. I need to put the pump handle upside down and not fill at the full rate. Is this normal? Does anybody have any tricks? I think I have tried everything.

Thanks

Mine is the same way. I can sometimes put the handle at an angle and get it to go good but all trial and error on mine.

It takes a bit of experimenting.

Seems to work better for me when I don't push the nozzle all the way in. This works better at some pumps than it does at others.

Yep, that's what I do with my '79SC. After seven years of thinking about it I haven't come up with a beter idea

I guess back in the days when they designed the fuel filler/tank path pumps were a lot slower then. I pick and choose my gas stations a little as some of the very new ones even the the gas filler on half blast it's still coming out too fast.

I am I glad to hear that my 80SC doesn't have some sort of problem with filling with gas. I always thought there was a malfunction.

4 O'clock

Same problems. I go for a position about 4 O'clock so at least most of the stream is pointed more or less down the filler neck throat. Also, in just far enough to seal the gas fume boot on the pump handle. Down/in further and the fuel stream doesn't get a straight shot. And, as earlier post mentioned, it depends on the pump. A little bit of hunting and you'll find some stations are awful, and others are easy to get a fast fill.

Same here, so it's definitely a design flaw in filler-tube to tank. Or maybe it was just the best they could do w/ parameters, ie. location of tank/gas cap.

My question: I have never been able to get a full reading of fuel guage, (goes to about 7/8), don't know if it is guage/sender or just impossible to fill all the way? Anyone else's experience?

I never had that problem with my 78 SC. But I have to say, here in New-Jersey, I never fill the gas myself either: I let the pros do it

How very wierd, my 81sc, I just point and pull the trigger and it all just happens, kinda like peeing against a tree in the forest.

Maybe the pumps here in the UK are just very slow pumping, who knows?

makes me grin just thinking of you guys and all the contortions you get into with the filler pipe just to fill her up...

LOL

Whats worse is the looks you get when you are fiddling with the pump handle trying to get gas in your porsche...

I sometimes have problems too. If I don't hold the filler at a certain angle the overflow cut off will break in constantly.

Good to know that I'm not the only one

89 Coupe has the same problems. I think its the way the gas spalshes out and the shut off for when your full. This is purely a guess on my part, but it is a pain having to constantly adjust until you get it right and hold your breath until that tank is full.

No problem here, ever. Here's some trivia: A top fuel dragster drinks fuel faster than it comes out of a gas pump. Fuel lines on the space shuttle are roughly the diameter of a coffee can.

Both my 83SC cab and current 88 turbo cab have this problem. I have found that sticking just the tip of the nozzel into the hole works the best. If I stick it all the way in, the pump keeps shutting off. Boy, that sounds a problem for Dr. Ruth now that I read that back.

Mine is the same way. I have to leave the handle resting on the bib for it to work. Now I know what the bib is there for.
