Question Oil Cooler fit?

I am going to order a front mount oil cooler like the carerra version to replace my trombone...what are the specs I should go by (i.e. FTG Size 6, 8, 10, or 12) and size of the cooler?

Thanks

H. D., I would recommend getting one of the complete Carrera oil cooler conversion kits Pelican sells: PEL-EXTOIL-01 or PEL-EXTOILSK if you're thinking about this conversion. They're a chunk of change but you'll get all the bits you need. The fittings on the OEM cooler lines are a German (DIN?) type and are not the same as the AN fittings I believe you are referring to. To convert to AN fittings one needs adapters such as those sold by http://www.batinc.net/ The adapters are not particularly cheap themselves. You do not want to use fittings that have a smaller ID than the OEM oil lines (I recall these to be 19 mm or about 3/4") to avoid creating too much pressure drop and restricting the flow of oil to the cooler. I've helped install one of the Carrera coolers on an SC; it required a long afternoon with the car on a lift. You'll also need the oil line wrenches or a good substitute. Cheers, Jim

you can get a raditaor type front fender cooler from a number of sources as a kit, the cooler comes with-12 fitting, and two pieces of aeroquip type line with the din and AN fittings

I recall that to really match the OEM oil line ID one needed to use AN-16 hose and fittings. Here's an old thread that may be of some interest:

The BAT page seems pretty good, and the Kit-B option may be what I go with...thanks for the info.

or the kit from this U.S. based business:

Yeah Jim, the Bat page had all the info I was looking for. Tanx

k9handler: Tanx for starting this tread. I've had these questions on my mind for some time. Did you read that Porsche Oil Cooling Guide on the Bat page? That pretty much covers it: http://www.batinc.net/files/kits.pdf

So now I have a problem. With all the info on Mocal, I'd prefere to shop there, but Setrab is Swedish and since i live in Norway its right next door. Not much info on their home page thou : http://www.setrab.se

no problem Arnljot
I also will be in Europe soon, but before I drive my car across the NM, AZ, and CA area to ship it I need the cooler installed. I am probably going to go with the mocal since it is an entire kit and will be easier to get shipped quickly.

HD,

I have said this before ... but some choose not to listen ...

The factory rubber lines to adapt your brass hard lines to the Carrera (or SC or Turbo) cooler are 22 mm ID (as are the rest of the scavenge lines) and almost identical to AN-16 hose ... if you get one of those short $25 lines and remove the swaged ring, the fitting will slip into AN-16 hose perfectly, and a simple worm-gear clamp will hold it in place without leaking. One $25 metric hose produces two adapter lines witrh AN-16 ends AND metric ends! Whether you need straight, 90°, or 135° ends at the cooler depends on which cooler you get!

It should be obvious why AN-16 fittings on a cooler are preferred. Going smaller to save money is not a great idea! There is typically no significant difference in price for AN-16 fittings vs AN-12 fittings on a cooler of a given size! it may take a while to find a cooler of the appropriate size equipped with AN-16 fittings, but your scavenge pump will not suffer from extra loading that AN-12 lines and coolers cause!

BAT, Ltd. can get AN-16 thermostats and coolers ... that is where I got my AN-16 thermostat!

Warren...
I guess I am confused, do you have any pics to help me visualize the install? What exactly are the differences in the hose/fittings that you stated?
On the positive note, I do have a friend who is very good with cars and has done most of my upgrades with me. I usually research the info, print the results and then purchase and install the upgrades with his assistance.

HD,

If you visualize the hoses in this pic with AN-16 fittings on one end ... that is what I am suggesting.

ok...I think I have it.
I guess I will look a bit closer at the fittings and go from there, but I do understand now how you suggest the mod with clamps.
