First Engine Drop of 2013?
 

The engine came out just before lunch today and I am glad I had another set of eyes during the extraction. I found an ATV lift on Craigs List for $50 last evening and it worked like a champ. I am doing this to tackle the clutch and at first glance I will probably need a flywheel. There are tons of micro cracks on an almost mirror-finish flywheel surface. Let the fun begin!

I also found that the throttle linkage/mount on the engine was very sloppy and loose....pending failure. I will post pics once I figure out this Mac.

Your flywheel does look shot. Order the new bolts at the same time you order the FW.
And while you are in there--------- you know what to do.

From the picture ( a tad blurry) the cracks are sure there but they may not be all that deep. I would let the flywheel refinisher make the call, they should be the experts. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I never met a crack that didn't want to propagate! I hate to take thickness off a flywheel, but will seek advice. I am inclined not to skimp "while I'm in there"

Its done. Look in the engine rebuild forum and you will find my fly wheel looking like yours with all the advice on the same question...

Got home last night before midnight and will prepare the things you would need. I'll be playing tennis in the morning and would be back home by 10 AM. And would be home for the rest of the day. Looking forward to meet another local Pelicanite.

Great progress today after fetching your laoner stand at your house. I was able to get the engine on the stand by my self. The flywheel is off and I noticed the main engine seal was leaking. I checked the head studs and I got excited when the magnet stuck to a lower stud, but it was only the washer.......oh well, I've got the originals studs. Lots of cleaning going on and I need to get that done to start painting.

It was a pleasure meeting you and talking P cars today. I look forward to that engine restart day!
Does anyone know a good cleaning solution (pre-painting) to apply to remove residual degreasing agents?

All types of paint prep solutions.
Best one for degreased METAL engine parts I've used is Acetone from the hardware store. (Don't use on plastic or fiberglass)
Ventilate well....

NoYouRelax, two questions for you as I need to do the same thing soon to chase oil leaks.

1)did you need to take off the rear bumper to clear it?

2)in terms of jacking it up, are you only up on the rear, and nothing required in front?

Hi J I also just completed my first drop and I did not have to remove the bumper.
I put the rear on jack stands up about 25" from the bottom of the bumper and then
raised the front as well.
Feels safer to me with all wheels off the grand with less chance of car rolling.
Once the engine is on the ground or on it's dolly's just lower the front of the car
and the rear bumper will raise even higher.

Let me know when you are ready to put the engine back on the car. I'll bring over my engine test stand and engine hoist to test run the engine before installing it in the car. Once you are fully satisfied with the test run, put it on a rolling cart and bolt it on the car. That's the way I do my engine test.

Just provide enough snack and I'll be a happy camper. And no alcoholic beverage for me please!!!! Soda would be great...........need any extra tools like flywheel oil seal extractor and installation jig?

Guardsred911.. The bumper comes off too easy to not do it that way, and my wife has not found my bumper tucked in the dining room yet. I am just sitting on jacks on the T bar covers with the front wheel chocked. I can get a T bar to ground dimension if you would like.

Gunzel.... Bushings alone might work for me but thanks for the offer neighbor. Will keep that in mind.
