Decal Removal ?

Anyone have a safe way to remove Decals.

Not sure if I can just scrape them off with a razor.

I would gently heat up the area with a heat gun, and use a plastic razor blade to remove the decal. Follow up with a quality adhesive remover to get rid of any residual adhesive.

Edit- sorry, I was assuming the decal was on glass, not paint. Like the others said, stick with the heat gun and adhesive remover.

Okay, edit again- they are on glass, and on the inside, so be very careful around the defrosting elements. I apologize that I did not see the pic in your garage before responding. Good luck

I don't see any decal...but on a warm day....use a blow dryer or heat gun, gently warm an edge and peel.

The glue will come off with "Goof Off" or other similar product. DO NOT USE A RAZOR BLADE.....unless on glass.

Wax the painted areas after using goof off as well.

Look on the back window...

If those are on the inside of the glass, do not use a razor blade. Use a hair dryer or heat gun and removed them carefully. Clean the old adhesive off with a rag and adhesive remover. Be very careful of the defroster grid.

Decals on the inside of rear window

Theere are dozen on the inside of the rear window and
they lay over the heating elements.

The windows came tinted from dealer.
Is the tint applied ?

My concern is ruining the tinted film (if it is a film)
And of course ruining the defroster element.

Let the responses that had nothing to do with glass serve as a suggestion to maybe just throw a little more data out on the front end.

Factory tinting is the glass - not film.

Get a hair blower - Heat gun is too hot for that kind of project unless you have used one before. Warm up the decal, use a razor to start an edge and then peel.

Thanks I was not sure if the tint was in the glass or not.
I will dry the hair dryer and razor and i will be sure to respect the defrosting element.

Anyone have a particular product they like for removing the glue residue

Both of the [/QUOTE) boxes have to be intact to make the quote thingie work - although you can edit another's quote text, the front and back bookends have to be there.

Respond in green when you are being sarcastic or humorous - with a sarastic twist - and without the intent of being flat out mean. (rules rules rules) When you are being flat out mean, no green is necessary. Keep that gun powder dry though for when you really need it. :-)

Just get the decal started between the defrost lines.

Goof Off was mentioned as an great product for removing glue. I would use nothing harsher (e.g., lacquer thinner) that may mess with the defrost lines.

Hair dryer, on low, and go slow. The vinyl will begin to soften / buckle. You can get plastic razor blades, but again be careful - hopefully you won't need them. Do not overheat the glass... and do it in the shade. If the decals have been on for a while they may be brittle and break up, spray Goof Off or a specialty vinyl adhesive remover like Mactac Rapid Remover, or lay a good quality high tack tape over the entire decal, heat from the other side and slowly peel away...

You might be able to get away with a citrus based adhesive remover, like Goo Gone. It's not as harsh as Goof Off. I find that it works for some, but not all adhesives. Or just using some cooking oil can break down adhesives as well. In general, it's always best to start with the mildest chemical and work up to stronger variants as needed.

Not acetone, it will eat rubber seals! If worried get the Mactac Rapid Remover, it is citrus based. I operate a signage / trade show company...

+1 on not using acetone. Just about the time you have the adhesive off the seal you will find things have softened.

I worked at Mactac in Stow, Ohio in the way back. Ran a slitter machine. When you got little finger cuts folks dipped their hands in an open 55 gallon drum of acetone. Owiee - no infections though. Suppose that may not have been the best long term health choice?

If this was me doing this I would get hypodermic needle from a diabetic and use 3M adhesive remover injected through the sticker...and I'd take my time.

Why on earth did you put all those stickers on there in the first place? Wouldn't a bunch of hats been a better choice for the back shelf? *Teehee*

I did not put them on the original owner put them on.
I just bought the car recently…... Stickers/Decals and all.
I think he put one decal for each year he owned the car. (Ouch)
I think I need a very petite, detailed oriented, patient person to spend a weekend back there removing those things.

Needles ?
Ouch Again.

How much is a New Rear Window ? LOL
