Its all a bunch of cr*p anyway because the car passes emissions as it is, just not the visual test. Course CA has the same situation...

Nope.....CA will refer you to a used parts place, they will not put you on double secret probation and do NOT require new parts. They will also give you a waiver if the parts are NLA or unavailable used.

Does'nt CA still require you to have the smog pump on the car these days if it came with one from the factory? So if the part is NLA you can get by without it?

I may go to the registration office and inquire a bit more. Have talked with several workshops here and lots of owners and they all say that you do not want to get caught without the cat in the inspection...

Joe,
Do what I did and register the car in Yavapai (Prescott) or Coconino (Flagstaff) county. There are no smog checks there yet and all they can do is question you. Find someone you know that has a cabin or home up there or rent a P.O Box in one of the strip malls. My Carrera 3.0 has been registered there for 4 years now, and no cat or smog tests.

:D

Different question....you were asking about cats....smog pumps be a different matter. My 83, a euro model, had a smog pump added by the Federal Smog Weenies after it was imported. The tag in the door says you have to have it. Even though the US model 83 SCs did not have one.....

No Rule says that a cat or a pump has to work.....only that it has to be there and spin or not be bypassed. Same with the cats.....has to be there. To pass the visual test......if you can pass the visual OR convince the tech that it IS all there.....AND the tail pipe, y'all be cool.....

joe,

Your state may allow you to take a pre-smog test, that is take the test unofficially to see if your car complies (you'll have to pay for the test but not for the certificate). If it passes and the tech has no problem officially passing it then......go for the official test or possibly there is a station that will test until you pass and you don't have to pony up any more money except for the cert.

If the tech fails for the smog or visual then you know what you have to do. Of course history will repeat itself in two years.

I personally would buy the necessary hoses and change the exhaust for the test because you will need them again in two years.

my 2 cents worth
