i could use some real simple steps on cleaning and checking my points.my car is a 1970 911t 2.2 permatune ignition,bousch coil and distributor(no vaccum)thanks in advance

If you believe there is a problem with the points ... such as erratic tach. or a miss, or hesitation, flat spot or loss of engine responsiveness, then there are probably other problems with the distributor as well. Points in a CDI-system only switch about 100 mA or less, so cleaning is seldom needed, and the cost is so low that I always recommend replacement, along with complete cleaning, inspection, and disassembly of the distributor. The solvent to be used is the non-flammable brake/degreaser type, and has to be used outdoors, then the distributor should be allowed to sit for an hour or so to allow dissipation of the fumes before disassembly is done indoors.

One final note -- the engine should be turned over by hand (fan pulley nut) to TDC on cylinder #1, before pulling the distributor. I don't recommend trying to remove points with the distributor on the engine, because the distributor has probably been neglected over the years, and cleaning, disassembling to check for rust or damaged parts is the most logical way of taking care of ignition problems. Bushings should be checked for wear and wobble. Bushings can be replaced with parts from an industrial bearing supply store.
