Alternator problem on 83SC 3.0 ?

I just got done digging out a piece of fan blade from my alternator housing . Problem is now the battery light comes on . I hear a slight chirpping from the alternator also . I must confess i did drop it on the shaft from about a foot when cleaning it. I also see the wire housing or block that lead into the distributor next to the alternator strap has came loose. I could not start it at first but when I snugged the block back on to the ditributor it fired. Any idea's why the battery light is on now. Maybe my brushes are screwed up ? Thanks Dave

You likely either damaged the bearings or brushes or maybe both. Probably time for a rebuilt or new alternator; your damaged alternator may not be rebuildable if you bent the shaft. Why was there a piece of fan blade in the alternator and how big was it? Jim

They were the size of maybe half a marble each. Fan blade just threw a chunk off and ended up in the in the back of the alternator . Was a brand new alternator . I drop it because I need elbow surgury from driving one two many rivets in airplanes . Toolhound

There is nothing wrong with the brushes ... or your warning lamp wouldn't glow at all! More than likely the fall knocked a connection loose on the regulator card or fractured it's PC board. The chirping sounds like a bent shaft. Better pull it out again and take it to an alternator shop for a check.
