Important - Need Help Debugging Email Function On This Server...

Howdy folks. The email notification section of this server doesn't appear to be working as well as the setup on the old server. Please help me out by sending yourself a test email.

Look up your profile by clicking on Members. For example, mine is here:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/members/659.html?action=getinfo

then click on send an email to this user (send one to yourself, NOT TO ME!!!).

Then please post here if you don't get it within about 5-15 minutes of sending it. You don't need to post your whole email address, only post the domain. For example, if it was me responding to this email my response to this thread would be something like:

Hey Wayne, I didn't get the email sent to me. My mail domain is @pelicanparts.com

Thanks, and hopefully, we can figure this out. It works for most of you, but not for some of you...

Also let me know if you have junk mail blocking turned on - it may be stopped by that...

I got it almost instantly. Sent to nostatic.fm domain.

Instantly to pacbell.net, but the clock is way off. Says 6:18 AM.

SMTP ok to mgroupus.com, but server timestamp was Wed 6/26/02 9:26AM when actual left coast time was PM.

FWIW, email posting notifications show the same timestamp error.

Good hunting, Wayne.

You need to set your timezone in the preferences section of your user cp. This allows you to see when the posts have been updated in your local time...

My timezone is correct in UserCP: GMT - 5hrs
Timestamp on posts are correct, but timestamps on email originating from the board are [timezone - 12]

No big deal for me - just a data point which I hope will help your debug effort. Really appreciate the scope of what you are doing Wayne - its amazing that you keep this running so smoothly.
Many thanx!

Wayne.. sent one last night to my personal account in hotmail.com and still waiting to receive the message.. may be hotmail??

Hope this helps

Message took about a minute to get here, directly to a mostly idle mail server in my office.

Snappy!

Less than 15 minutes to Hong Konghttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/smileJap.gif

Thanks,
Mark

PS my date stamp is incorrect too. I've set it correctly for my time zone (Hong Kong) but its about an hour too fast I think. It said 1.19am but its only 12.29 - Geez I can't wait up any longer to be the 200,000 post:D

Cheers
Mark

What Tony said. I see posts in Pacific time, but mail messages come in at GMT.

Didn't work for me, domain: @tampabay.rr.com

I'm also one of the folks who doesn't get e-mail notification anymore.

I just made a change to a setting. Can you roadrunner and hotmail people try it again?

SeaDweller 06-27-2002 04:14 PM

Well, the e-mail function works now......I'll try testing the e-mail notification function as well......

SeaDweller 06-27-2002 04:54 PM

I'm back in business Wayne!!! Just got my first e-mail notification in months!!!!!

Thanks!!

Ahh, I now what the problem was. On the new server, the return email address was listed in the header as me@localhost.com. I changed that to wayne@pelicanparts.com.

Some (not all) ISPs will deny email if the originator doesn't have a return address from the same domain. This is supposedly supposed to reduce junk email, but in fact, it doesn't seem to work.

Can anyone at hotmail check this for me?

-Wayne
