adj spring plates...what should I buy...??
 

as I see it, I have 4 choices...car is a 77 targa which has its oe non adj spring plates...car is not tracked or maybe it will be used for a de or such 1 or 2x...

soooooooooo, my choices are:
1. keep non adjustible spring plates...not really an option which is why I make this post seeking input from you all...
2. sway a way adj sp's...i have herd via the "interntet' that the adj screw can come lose...?? maybe an internet myth...??
3. sc or early carrera adj sp's...
4. erp adj sp's...
my objective is to be somewhat cost conscious, but to not cut myself short either...
sway aways are ~ 350 complete w/ bushs...erp w/ seperate purchased bushs ~550...sc/carrera oe plates & bushs ~300 used...

I guess after typing this all up, the question is: how much of a difference is there btwn the sway aways vs erp set up...?? is the additional ~200 worth it to spend...OR how about used sc/carrera @ ~ 300 vs sway aways for an additional ~50...??

I would tend to lean twds either the sways as the additional 200 seems a stretch...as for the additional 50 to go with sway aways, that seems to make good sense o spend that 50 for a lot quicker adjmt & set up...

what do you all think of my deductions = swayaways seem most realistic...UNLESS someone can breath life into why to spend ~200 more for the erp set up OR to save 50 to then be required to spend a whole lot more time to use the sc/carrera plates...

Get the ones with the locknut.

Elephant Racing adjustable spring plates are very high quality and have the locking nut. Here's a link to the Spring Plates.

I've had sway away adj. springplates on my '87 930 since 2006.
No problems with them at all and it's really nice adjusting rear ride hight and corner balance in minutes with a 1/4" allen head wrench.

I got them on sale at a u t o m o t i o n for around $275 back then and installed them with moly grease on the red urethane bushings that come with them. Those bushings fit really tight and have a lot of sticktion which makes the ride harsher over small bumps with 18" wheels and 30 series tires in back. You can turn them on a lathe if you have one to make them fit less tight so the ride is smoother over bumps.

I installed ER polybronze bushings in the front control arms about a year ago and love the improvement in ride smoothness and steering control. The origonal rubber bushings were shot.
Also put in new ball joints, tie rods, and rennline monoballs in the camber plates at the same time which tightened up the front end. Already had good Bilstiens.

About a month ago I installed ER polybronze bushings in the sway away spring plates and rennline sealed mono balls in the trailing arms. Again the ride is all around smoother and nicer and the steering is precise and tighter.
The polybronze bushings for sway aways are $335. Thats more than the springplates were when I bought them.

I could go on about my home alighnment with squared off strings around the car and digital angle gauge to set camber and caster, and corner balanceing but the main thing is I like the sway aways alot and the ride hight allen heads stay put even with anti sieze on the threads. The weight of the back of the car is on them.

If you wanted you can just put a nut on the allen head and tighten it to lock it in place. Havn't needed to on mine though.

Here's a better picture of my Elephant Racing spring plate. This has an improvement over the Sway Away in that the big nut on the side of the height adjuster locks the adjustable plates together, keeping them quiet and locked.

Your '77 should have the OEM adjustable spring plates (1977 was the first year for them). They are not as easy to adjust as the ER plates, but a lot easier than re-indexing the torsion bar.

ten years on sway away....nice to have when 245s were no longer available.

I've had my Sway-A-Ways installed for 19 years with no issues at all...

A cheaper option is to modify some factory adjustable plates so they have a quick adjuster like the sway-away but retain the big locking nut. I'm having a set done right now, ill post a pic when I get them back

Is this the Rebel Racing version? I saw pics from Rebel a month or so back of something exactly like this. Simple, brilliant solution.

Rebel Racing will modify your spring plates like that.

if it has been Flieger, do you by chance have any pics...?? if not , chris can post when his are complete...
so if I have this correct, ER will modify oe "adj" spring plates to give them the set screw adjstmt feature like the sway aways, right...??
...once more info is avail on this, I am curious on the cost of all the parts & machining vs buying sway aways or ERP sprig plates like what Craig_D posted earlier in this thread...

For clarity, ERP is taken to be Eisenlohr Racing Products, one of the first with a "935" suspension setup. They were there first from what I understand, so Elephant Racing is ER or else spell out the whole word.

My spring plates are the SC Porsche type, but Rebel Racing will do the modification to allow for easier adjustment of the plate (no eccentric bolts) but with a pinch bolt to lock it all together for more safety and better performance.

Although most of the mods I have on my suspension are Elephant Racing the spring plates are Sway-Away. What a great decision that was.

I'll post some pics as soon as I get them back but I was just quoted 2 weeks for the service and shipping.

Since you have a '77 with the OEM adjustable spring plates (like me), I just looked at the ER site again and it appears if you already have the OEM adj plates, Chuck provides the option of only purchasing the Splined Hubs from his adjustable plates, and you re-use your existing main spring plate (and save $80). I'm now seriously considering going this route since my plates are currently off the car and just came back from being plated. I'll have to give Chuck a call on Monday.
