Removing Race from Spindle

Hey Pelicans,

Anyone have experience in getting this race removed from the spindle? See another rebuild on line, but not at this point yet..

Heat is your friend...and a good sharp cold chisel to get under the lip of the race from several directions.
I once had to resort to liquid nitrogen to get one off (very dangerous) it froze the race and the race shattered when struck...pieces everywhere.

penetrating oil, heat, penetrating oil, heat, hammer, chisel, gear puller, hammer.....etc...etc... walk it off side to side

I dunno if it was worth it, but I was p-coating the struts, and figured I'd replace the seal behind it.

There is a great video over at pmbperformance.com.

I came across this during my current rebuild HERE.

I started with a cold spindle (around 37F degrees), and then I hit the race with a heat gun. I focused on the race and went around it slowly, but not for a long time (maybe two minutes).

Then a pry-bar without the handle, which is effectively a chisel, and I just tapped it off with a stander sized hammer. I worked around the race with small taps and it came off in about 45 seconds.

Hope that helps! Oh, and my other spindle didn't have that race, and the subsequent bearing damage can be seen at the end of my thread (above).

Thanks Gents! Craig , following your rebuild too.. I'm going ER parts, but more straight track.. poly bronze bushings, de-cambered ball joints, hollow torsions, adjustable this and that.. 23mm/34mm stiff ride stuff..

Thanks again..

Cool! Sounds like it'll be a pretty serious track weapon! I'd love to see your progress.

Let us know how you make out with removing that race. Time for me to head back to the garage and get that second hub stripped. I'm hoping no ruined bearings in that side...we'll see. ;)

Just a suggestion, be careful not to gauge to spindle with your chisel trying to get the race off. Like so many other things on these cars, heat is your friend.

Done this since years in my motorcycles days and on my 930 too:

Heat the race in the middle of the ball area with a big flame torch until a dot of maybe 3-4mm is red glowing, then the race will fall with almost no force down!

Agreed

Agreed... I have a 20ton shop press and looking to see how I can use that instead. Need the right "helper pieces" to do this.. Worked great pressing out the seals and races on my hubs.

Also accomplished fuel filter change and Rennline solid motor mounts and SS engine brace mount today..
